Dear cavers,
this is official!

While most of us celebrated all kind of Christmas warmths and looked
forward to the New Year's Eve's much warmer festivities, the 2003
Slovenian expedition in the Cehi 2 shaft inside Kanin - Rombon
mountain group, Slovenia, reached - 1533 m. The new survey places
Cehi 2 on the sixth place on the list of the deepest caves of the
world. Between Torca del Cerro, Spain (nr. 5, -1589 m) and Sarma,
Georgia (now nr. 7, -1530 m).

The final push was made between 26th and 29th December 2002. After a
4 hours ascent with heavy loads, the group reached the entrance at
2032 m and immediately continued with the 20 hours long descent to
the lowest bivouac at - 1370 m. There the lady of the team, Ana
Makovec, stayed.

The men went on through the new passage, found in the past expedition
by Tomaz Cesnik. In 29 hours of surveying, roping and climbing, they
reached the new deepest point of the cave at - 1533 m. For the
moment, the survey ends with a syphon. Tomaz Cesnik climbed a chimney
to find a by-pass, but had to stop because of shortage of rope.
Luckily, as the stream started to rise!. Outside the weather became
warmer with rain and snow melting.

The whole team had to flee, and encountered more problems with
helping Ales Strukelj, who pulled out a handhold and fell in the ice
cold water. A short stop in the bivouac helped to warm him up and dry
a little his clothes. But the rush had to go on for the final 25
hours ascent. On one horizontal passage with ropes, the team hardly
escaped more baths in the rising stream. Half an hour later the
escape would have had been impossible!

After 80 hours of continuous roping, climbing and surveying,
interrupted only with short stops with naps and bites on belays, the
cavers reached the entrance and ended the adventure with the final
1500 m staggering descent to the town Bovec on the foothill of the
mountain.

Extreme physical efforts made possible the statistics as follows: -
1533 m is a new Slovenian depth record, the shaft Cehi 2 is at the
moment on the 6th place on the world deepest caves list. The bivouac
at - 1370 m, reached by Ana Makovec, is a new female depth world
record. The length of the whole survey is 5.061 m. In one year and
many visits, the cave has been deepened for 163 m and lengthened for
781 m.

The leader of the last final push team was Janko Marinsek, other
members were Tomaz Cesnik, Matjaz Milharcic (all DZRJ "Luka Cec",
Postojna), Mitja Mrsek, Janez Puc, Ales Struklej (all JD Rakek) and
Ana Makovec (JD Borovnica).

The leader of the Slovenian Cehi 2 project is Anton Palcic, JD
Borovnica.

The sponsors for the last winter's part of the project were Siol
(general and web sponzor), Slovenian Speleological Association,
Promontana, Edelrid - K&K Trade, Edelweis, Kong, Stubai and Silva -
K&J, KRAS Sezana, TP Postojnska jama, Anthron, HTZ Velenje and IZRK.

The show will go on with the checking of the by-pass through the
chimney above the syphon and by examinations of possible connections
with other nearby caves. Specially with those with higher entrances.
300 further meters are available from the entrance of the shaft to
the montain top above and another 80 m downwards to the springs in
the valley. Theoretically, a new world record is possible on the
location!
