International Year of Caves and Karst: Posters Available

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) is next year. It has incredible potential to advance speleology in many and great ways, but only if we all work together to make it possible. As many of you prepare for the IYCK, new materials are made by the International Union of Speleology to assist you.

At the IYCK website, www.iyck2021.org, you find an IYCK Planning Guide and promotional materials in the Download section. Now you will also find a Poster section. Two posters were prepared. The General Poster contains little text or information beyond announcing the IYCK. The Technical Poster has information on the value of caves and karst. Please download, print, and post them to help announce your IYCK activities. (At the time of this writing, only the Technical Poster is on the website; the General Poster will be available soon.)

Both posters are in English. If you would like to translate them into your country’s language, please contact me.

Thank you,

George Veni, PhD

Executive Director, National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI)

and

President, International Union of Speleology (UIS)

Request for Assistance: Planetary Cave Research Survey

Dear planetary caves explorers/researchers:

We’re seeking input from scientists and engineers knowledgeable in planetary science and/or engineering to participate in our survey to identify the “Fifty fundamental questions in planetary caves science and exploration”.

A research group of 34 scientists and engineers have developed a list of questions across seven disciplines in planetary caves science and exploration — these groups are big picture/multidisciplinary, astrobiology, cave environment, geology, robotics, instrumentation, and human exploration.

Provided below is a link to a Google survey form. The survey consists of 152 questions across the aforementioned disciplines. It will take about 20 minutes to complete. The results of this survey will be used to develop a peer-reviewed publication on this topic.

By completing this survey, you are aiding the community in advancing planetary caves science and exploration. If you’re willing to assist, please complete this survey by 11 AUG 2020.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Many thanks in advance and be well —

Jut

International Show Cave Survey: Cave Managers Please Participate

Dear Show Cave Managers and Associates,

On behalf of the International Show Caves Association (ISCA), I hope you, your family, and your colleagues are healthy and safe. We are certainly living in challenging times. The show cave industry worldwide has been severely impacted with most show caves closing for extended periods of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope show caves in your region have been able to reopen, or will be able to reopen soon.

At this critical point, it is very important that we take the time to do a couple of things. First, we need to establish a baseline for the significance of the show cave industry worldwide. In other words, we need to be able to tell the world how show caves contribute to the global economy. Second, we need to find out to what degree the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted show caves, our employees, the economy, and our mission. To do this, we have created a short survey that we are asking show cave managers to complete on behalf of their show cave. The results will be shared with the show cave industry and our affiliates. Results will also be used to promote the show cave industry in presentations, to the media, to vendors and public officials. (It is optional to provide your show cave’s name at the end of the survey or remain anonymous.)

Here is a link to the International Show Cave Survey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ISCA_COVID19

Importantly, although all ISCA members (including associates and affiliates) are receiving this email, we would like to hear from ALL show cave operations to give us more information about the industry as a whole. Please forward this along to any show cave managers you know and encourage them to fill out this survey on behalf of their show cave.

Please complete this survey by 14 August to help us with this important effort.

Thank you,

Brad Wuest
ISCA President

About ISCA:
The International Show Caves Association (ISCA)  was founded in 1990 and is headquartered in Frasassi/Genga, Italy, ISCA is an international organization of persons, associations, corporations, and government agencies who own, manage or operate show caves that are open to the public.  ISCA provides a critical forum for show caves to network and collaborate on matters that pertain to their caves.  ISCA aims to promote, encourage, and support the cooperation of show cave operators, speleologists and cave enthusiasts through the sharing of information and to promote the preservation and conservation of caves, while increasing public interest in the world of show caves by way of unique marketing and the evolution of methods to enhance the show cave experience.

Now Available: Virtual Tour of Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, USA

I have some exciting news. Great Basin National Park will launch the Virtual Tour of Lehman Caves. This is the result of LiDAR scanning that took place in February under the direction of Blase LaSala.

The virtual tour consists of three main videos, with five call-out videos in each that go into more detail on specific topics. They are full color and professionally narrated. Even if you've been in Lehman Caves a lot, you'll see some different perspectives with the added lighting and ability to zoom in to high features. With the cave closed this summer, it's nice to have a way to share it. These videos will be hosted on the Park's YouTube channel. If you'd like a preview, check out the Trailer: https://youtu.be/pTf06zfUgM0. It is followed by the other video. Otherwise, check out the Great Basin National Park website

Geological Society of America: Call for Karst Abstracts

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is that time of year when the abstract deadline (August 4) for the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting is soon approaching. Even though the meeting will be very different this year with everything being online, we are still hoping for a strong presence in sessions sponsored by the Karst Division. Below are the karst-focused sessions, and I hope you are able to submit an abstract to one of them on your current research in the next two weeks. The conference website may be found at the following link: community.geosociety.org/gsa2020/home. I hope you are healthy and well, and I hope to "see" you at GSA!

Best regards,

Andrew Luhmann ()

GSA Karst Division

British Cave Research Association Science Symposium: Call for Abstracts

The BCRA Cave Science Meeting 2020 is now confirmed for Saturday November 14th 2020 but will take place using an online portal. It will be hosted by Professor Mike Rogerson at the University of Northumbria.

Although we would very much enjoy contributions that discuss how caves have behaved during the lockdown period, we are open to abstracts on any subject linked to cave and karst science, from professional or amateur researchers. We are expecting to have about 10 talks on the day, and would like to see what you have been doing recently. As in previous years we invite contributions across the cave/karst spectrum including archaeology, biology, geomorphology, hydrology and speleothem science.

Presentation slots are not limited to those with a connection to the UK

- this invitation is to all interested cave and karst scientists worldwide. Please do submit an abstract by emailing it to Mike Rogerson () as soon as possible and by Friday 11 September at the latest (put "BCRA abstract" in the email subject to ensure it goes to the right inbox folder). The template for abstracts is available on our News Forum at http://bcra.org.uk/forum

Attendance will be free, using an online portal (likely Zoom) so participants worldwide are invited, although do be aware that talks will be scheduled for 0900 to 1700 GMT. We are exploring possibilities for a virtual field trip on the 15th November – more on that later.
