Тема: International Year of Caves and Karst: monthly Partners update

Dear Partners in the International Year of Caves and Karst,

Thank you again for joining and support the International Year.

I am sorry for not sending you a message one month ago, but I was waiting to confirm important news. UNESCO has invited the UIS to celebrate the International Year of Caves and Karst at UNESCO Headquarters! Caves have never held such a high international position until now! The celebration will be at UNESCO in Paris on 14 September 2021. Because of the pandemic, there will be severe restrictions on the number of people who can attend. We do not know how many at this time, only that we need to include as many UNESCO ambassadors as possible so they can return to their governments and teach what they have learned about caves and karst. We know there will be virtual attendance at the meeting, but we do not yet know if it will be just for ambassadors or for everyone. We hope everyone.

We are now working on the many details for the celebration with UNESCO and I do not have more information at this time. I will send more news as it becomes available. For now, you can share this news with your local to national governments and other organizations to show the importance of caves and karst. By showing that UNESCO supports us, it proves your work with caves and karst is important. This news will help you find new partners and support. You can talk to your governments’ UNESCO offices and encourage them to be at celebration. Let them know you expect to hear back from them and for them to tell you how they will improve cave and karst research and protection in your countries.

To learn if your county is a member of UNESCO and how to reach your country’s UNESCO offices, go to https://en.unesco.org/countries.

On other news, we now have 203 partner organizations from many countries! Visit http://iyck2021.org/index.php/partners/ to see who you are and to develop partnerships and programs between your groups.

We have 202 completed events! You can find them at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/#. Many are video lectures and workshops that you can watch and enjoy at any time. We also have 78 events announced that will happen, or are already happening as a series of events. You can find them at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/.

As a reminder, if you have completed your event or when it is complete, please send a short report for the Event Results page, http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/, to Jasmina whose address is near the top of the page.  It is easy. Simply copy the event announcement, except that “For more information” is replaced by “Event report” which can be a link to a video of lectures, news media reports or to a website, or a PDF or PowerPoint with the results of the event.

Posting your results is very important. At the end of the year we will compile the results of all the events into one document that everyone can use to demonstrate the importance of caves and karst globally. We hope it will help all of us find funding and other support for more exploration, research, and protection of caves and karst.

I hope you are all safe and well, and I thank you for your support of the UIS and the International Year of Caves and Karst. If you have questions or need anything from me or the UIS, please let me know.

George
