The International Year of Caves and Karst: Opportunities Abound!

At the end of each NCKRI news message is a list of upcoming conferences, but during this year of the International Year of Caves and Karst, many more opportunities exist that you will find helpful and instructive. The International Year was created to teach people around the world about caves and karst. Most completed events you can watch at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/, which has become an incredible library of video lectures and information about caves and karst from around the world. Go look!

But there are also over 100 events that are scheduled for the coming days and months that are not listed at the end of this NCKRI message. They include workshops, small meetings, teaching programs, webinars, and other activities you can join. You will find them listed at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Join them and tell others to join too, especially friends in the general public, to make this International Year a success.

Also, we encourage you to plan your own events and activities for the International Year, and no matter how small, please announce them on http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Use the simple format on that page to write your announcement, it will take less than 5 minutes, and send your announcement to our excellent web manager whose address is at the top of the page. Together, we can teach the “hole” world!

The International Year is organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS). We now have 189 national and international organizations partnering with us. Join us! And visit the UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/) for news and more information.

Cave Week is Coming Soon!

Hello All!

I hope 2021 has been treating everyone well.

Cave Week is less than a month away and is big part of the US National Park Service’s celebration of the International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK). My goal for this email is to be a refresher on the purpose of Cave Week and remind everyone how they can participate.

The purpose of Cave Week is to highlight cave and karst sites across the US that are managed by the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, as well as private show caves. However, this year is special because it is IYCK and we are trying to show off sites around the world the public might not have on their radar. This year Cave Week is June 6-12, Celebrate Cave Week! - Caves and Karst (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)

To reach as many people as possible, Cave Week uses various social media platforms. Use the platforms you have at your disposal. For example, Carlsbad will be using Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We will be putting up 1 - 2 posts a day about the park and sharing content/stories from participating sites and significant sites across the world. I encourage everyone to share content from other sites to broaden the public's knowledge about cave and karst. Use the hashtags #CaveWeek and #IYCK2021 in your posts so the public and other sites can follow and see what is happening throughout the week. The NPS IYCK, International Year of Caves and Karst 2021—NPS Celebrates! - Caves and Karst (U.S. National Park Service), websites also have themes for each month, which can be used for your posts. The theme for June is Junior Rangers.

I also encourage everyone to use the comment section of the Cave Week Team in Microsoft Teams to work together and bounce ideas off one another. It is a great resource to share posts, links, and photos. Everyone on this email should already be added to the Team. If you are not part of the Cave Week Team, please let me know and I will add you.

It should also be mentioned that June 6th is National Cave and Karst Day. Thank you to the National Caves Association, National Caves Association (cavern.com), for getting this day on the calendar every year! From this year forward, Cave Week will include this day to make things easier for planning and to amplify the importance of these resources.

Another aspect of IYCK to mention is Art Contest, Cave and Karst Art Contest - Caves and Karst (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). The link to the Art Contest page can be found below along with the link to the Cave Week website. If your site would like to participate in the contest but has not contacted the IYCK team, please contact myself or . The last day for submissions is June 12th.

If you know of another cave and karst sites or clubs that might be interested in participating, have them contact me through my email. Also, if you have any questions concerning Cave Week, feel free to contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

PhD Student Opportunity in Karst and Alpine Hydrogeology

Karlsruhe University, Institute of Applied Geosciences, in Germany is offering the following position for a PhD student.

Job description

Our hydrogeological research covers the entire spectrum of groundwater research. Special focus is on karst and alpine hydrogeology, groundwater protection and management, and tracer tests.

Goal of this dissertation is the improved understanding of transport processes of particles and fecal bacteria in alpine karst aquifers. An early-warning system for spring water quality is to be developed based on time series of the microbial contamination and the particle-size distribution. Machine-learning based methods for prediction are to be evaluated. Field test sites are located in the German/Austrian Alps.

The dissertation is a contribution to the collaboration project "HydroKarst: Development of an online particle-size measurement unit and a multi-gas microflotation device for automated identification and separation of particles in spring water of karst areas" which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Qualifications

Prerequisite is a M.Sc. degree in Applied Geosciences, Hydrogeology, Environmental Sciences, Geoecology or a related field. Applicants should have sound knowledge and strong interest in hydrogeological field work in the Alps, hydrochemistry and/or microbiology, data analysis and scientific writing. A driving license is required.

Please send your application by 15 May 2021 including a motivation letter, your CV, and all certificates/references as one PDF-file to Dr. N. Goeppert (), who you should also contact for more information.

ALCADI Conference: Postponed

To all stakeholders,

Unfortunately, the persistence of the pandemic, due to the Covid-19 virus, has made us postpone the date of the ALCADI 2020 symposium several times. Therefore, for reasons beyond our control, we have decided to postpone ALCADI 2020 to this year (2021) on days 3-4-5 September, in the hope that the virulence of this pandemic has subsided. We apologize to all those who had already announced their presence in Gorizia but, as you can well understand, we are faced with truly exceptional events, never experienced before in our memory. In any case, as already announced, in agreement with the Scientific Committee and the various sponsoring bodies, it is our intention to print the proceedings of the symposium in advance in order to have them available for the authors in September. Since we do not want to lose the considerable work done by authors and researchers who had already signed the commitment to participate in "ALCADI 2020", we confirm that the abstracts already received remain valid. Those who have already sent their works, and those who wish to send new ones, are requested to let us know as soon as possible so that we can have them viewed by the scientific committee and urgently take them to print. We will take care to keep you informed about new developments and detailed programs of the symposium.

All correspondence must be sent to:
