International Year of Caves and Karst: Planning Is Starting in Multiple Countries

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) begins next year, but this year is when people around the world need to start planning events. Brazil is distributing thousands of leaflets and giving lectures. Costa Rica has created a plan for monthly events. France is hosting the International Congress of Speleology. Italy is organizing Speleo Karamaton. Germany and Morocco are developing plans with universities. The USA is coordinating a list of events across North America. Slovenia will dedicate its Classical Karst School to the IYCK and is planning the closing ceremonies for December 2021.

A lot of good work has begun and even more is needed. The IYCK Planning Guide is critically important to help you understand the IYCK and create events to make the IYCK a success. You can find it and the information leaflet in multiple languages and with more information at www.iyck2021.org .

The IYCK has incredible potential to advance speleology in many and great ways, but only if we all work together to make it possible. Please send me any questions and news on your IYCK planning.

Congratulations! Bigfork High School Cave Club wins 2020 US President's Environmental Youth Award

The Bigfork High School Cave Club was awarded the President’s Environmental Youth Award. The award focused on development of eBat and eCave sites, which allows people without access to GIS to contribute the club’s cave monitoring data. The award also recognizes the club’s many years of work to help conserve and protect cave bats and other cave resources.   Bigfork High School Cave Club member Ryan Cantrell was the prime mover in getting the club recognized.   He, Colten Wroble, and Scout Jessop created the eBat website.

“The President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) recognizes outstanding environmental projects by K-12 youth. The PEYA program promotes awareness of our nation's natural resources and encourages positive community involvement. Since 1971, the President of the United States has joined with EPA to recognize young people for protecting our nation's air, water, land, and ecology. It is one of the most important ways EPA and the Administration demonstrate commitment to environmental stewardship efforts created and conducted by our nation's youth. ”

Bigfork High School Cave Club’s eCave has been partially funded by the US Forest Service in Region 1 through a challenge cost share agreement. They have also completed work in Montana and elsewhere for the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service.

ASTM Karst Subcommittee: Invitation to Join

ASTM International has created a Karst Subcommittee (D18.27). Its purpose is to develop standards that assist and/or guide the protection of karst and pseudokarst resources and assist in the understanding of geohazards accompanying those systems. This responsibility includes standards relating to the classification, characterization, and properties of karst and pseudokarst systems and processes. Standards involving associated site characterization, geologic, hydrogeologic, and geotechnical aspects associated with potential and/or actual ground instability are also included.

The reason for the creation of D18.27 is because standards are being created around the world, and often by people who have good intentions but lack expertise in karst. If you have experience in karst or pseudokarst geology, hydrogeology, and/or geotechnical methods, we invite you to join the ASTM Karst Subcommittee to help develop the best standards possible for the proper evaluation and management of karst.

If you are an ASTM member, please join D18.27. If you are not an ASTM member, I invite you to join at https://www.astm.org/MEMBERSHIP/index.html . Membership is only $75 for individuals. You do not need to be from the US to join. Remember, it is “ASTM International.” D18.27 was announced by ASTM only two days ago and already has members from four countries!

Geological Society of America North-Central Section Meeting Goes Virtual

The annual meeting of The Geological Society of America’s North-Central Section, originally scheduled to take place in Duluth, Minnesota, will be held virtually on 18–19 May, with technical sessions in the morning and student programming in the afternoon. The online meeting is open and available to everyone for free. No registration is required.

Both oral and poster presenters will prepare their presentations ahead of time, record them, and upload them to GSA’s conference website by 11 May. All uploaded presentations will be viewable through 22 May. A schedule for oral and poster presentations will be determined and posted online by 14 May.

The meeting will include the session “ Caves, Karst, and the Hydrogeology of Fractured Bedrock Aquifers” on 18 May, as well as other sessions of interest.

On 18–19 May, all uploaded presentations will be shown through online webinars that anyone can watch in standard 20-minute slots, with a discussion time at the end of each technical session. Poster presenters will upload a poster and a 3-minute lightning talk to accompany it. Time for Q&A will be included.

Student programming will be offered in the afternoon after the technical sessions. Two mentor meetings and three career workshops will be offered. All students are encouraged to attend.

US National Speleological Society Convention Goes Virtual

Dear NSS Friends,

As you know, due to circumstances beyond our control, this year’s National Speleological Society Convention in Elkins, West Virginia, USA, was postponed to 2023. As a sort of consolation and distraction from being quarantined, we are offering some elements of Convention as virtual events.

These include the Cartographic Salon, Cave Ballad Salon, Graphic Arts Salon, Photography Salon, Symbolic Emblems Salon, T-Shirt Salon, and Video Salon; as well as the Communications and Electronics Section and Vertical Section meetings.

We will also offer a number of presentations from West Virginia Exploration and United States Exploration. Also for your viewing pleasure will be the Cave Conservancy Roundtable and the State Survey Roundtable. The Fine Arts Salon folks are planning a special offering that is sure to please.

Most importantly, we will offer the Thursday night Awards Salon and Friday Awards show on those days during the last week of July. It will almost be like you’re in Elkins.

If you had been planning to give a presentation in Elkins, know that it is not too late. Contact the person in charge of that section or sessions and work things out. Many presentations can be done in the virtual realm. But do not think that this is the wave of the future. This is a one-time only offering during the last week in July. If you’ve never gone to an NSS Convention, now is your chance to see one aspect of the many benefits they offer. Who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired to attend or to make a presentation of your own at a future Convention!

We hope you will enjoy the non-Convention this summer. At least it will give you something to do that is cave related, in case we are still not caving by then.

Thanks,

Rich Geisler and Meredith Hall Weberg 2020/23 NSS Convention Co-Chairs

P.S. If you had registered for Convention, we are still working on the process to offer you a full refund; the chance to move your money towards next year’s Convention in Weed, California; or to donate your money to the NSS. AND if you reserved hotel rooms in Elkins, PLEASE don’t forget to cancel those reservations! The hotels are being notified that we postponed Convention, but you need to cancel anyhow.

14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst: Postponed

Dear Potential Participants of the 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst, Chęciny, Poland

The 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst would have taken place in June 2020, but due to the pandemic situation it has been postponed until probably spring 2021. More news, if not a firm date for the symposium, will be published in the UIS Pseudokarst Commission’s next news message in August 2020. For more information about the symposium visit https://14pseudokarst.wonders4you.com/ . For more information about the UIS Pseudokarst Commission and to join, visit http://www.pseudokarst.com/ .

6th EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium: Postponed

Dear ladies and gentlemen who had registered for the 6th EuroSpeleo Cave Protection Symposium scheduled 22 - 26 September 2020. Due to the Corona/COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the freedom of travel in Europe, we unfortunately have to cancel our meeting in September 2020. In view of the circumstances, we hope for your understanding.

But there is also good news. The new symposium date has already been fixed: 26-30 October 2021. The subject of the symposium and the location will remain the same:

"Assessing, monitoring and protecting cave biotopes and geotopes through Natura 2000 or similar programs in Europe"

at the BfN-International Academy for Nature Conservation Isle of Vilm in the Baltic Sea region in Germany.

As your registration for this year was accepted and on the basis of your application and the documents you have submitted, we will send you a new invitation with a preliminary agenda and further information and a form to request the new travel funds (2021) at the beginning of November and ask for a confirmation of your participation at the Symposium in 2021. Nevertheless, we would like to emphasize that we would be very pleased if you could all attend next year.

In this sense, stay healthy and hopefully see you next year!

Kind regards

The ESPS organization team,

Jean-Claude Thies (ECPC)
Bärbel Vogel (ECPC)
Ute Feit (BfN)
