The William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science

Administered by the Karst Waters Institute
www.karstwaters.org

The William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science
recognizes the significant contributions of the late William (Bill) L. Wilson,
who tackled some
of the most difficult karst science questions in Florida and elsewhere
through his consulting company, Subsurface Evaluations, Incorporated.  To
stimulate the development of new, energetic, motivated, and creative karst
scientists and to remember Bill Wilson
and his dedication to karst science, the scholarship was established by Diane
C. Wilson in his memory.  The scholarship includes a one-time award of $1,000.
The scholarship is open to any student who is currently enrolled in, or has
been accepted into, a
master’s degree program at an institution of higher education in the United
States.  This year’s deadline for all application materials is February 1,
2019.  Information on how to apply can be found at the Karst Waters Institute
website ( http://karstwaters.org/scholarship/ ).
Additional information can be had through email to Dr. Janet S. Herman (
 ).

Symposium on Caves, Karst, and Subterranean Environments: Cuba

The Symposium on Caves, Karst, and Subterranean Environments will be held in
Havana, Cuba, on 1-5 July 2019. For more information, see the attached
circular.

4th Summer School on Speleothem Science: Romania

The Summer School on Speleothem Science is a student-based initiative with the
goal of introducing the field of speleothem science to students (PhD and
Masters)  and early career scientists, fostering future collaborations between
researchers. After three successful summer schools (Heidelberg 2013, Oxford
2015, Burgos 2017) we are excited to announce the next summer
school will be hosted by the “Emil Racovita” Institute of Speleology (ERIS)
and Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania!

The summer school will take place between August 11th-17 th , 2019. The
schedule will be composed of lectures by leaders in the field, workshops on
age models and other geochemical
tool kits, lab tours of the Geochemistry, Geochronology and Bio-Nano-Science
labs and field trips to the Apuseni Mountains, which are rich in karst
topography and tourist caves. Furthermore, the participants will have an
opportunity to present their current
research during an informal poster session. For more information, see
https://www.speleothemschool.com/ .

Carpathian Karst Geo Trip: Romania and Serbia

The Karst Commission of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH)
is organising a Geo Trip to the Carpathian Karst on 15-18 June 2019 , prior
to the 4th Conference of the Central European Group (CEG) of IAH. The tour
includes visit of attractive karst surface features, springs, caves along the
southern margin of Carpathian Mountains in the two countries Romania and
Serbia, between Danube and Olt
rivers (Donji Milanovac – Baia de Arama – Trgu Jiu – Horezu). Registration is
open until end of April. If you are not a member of the commission or the IAH,
this may be a great time to join! More information and the application form
can be found on www.karst.edu.rs , which includes a photo gallery you can find
photos from the area.

New Book—The Karst Systems of Florida: Understanding Karst in a Geologically
Young Terrain

“Karst Systems of Florida,” by Sam B. Upchurch, Thomas M. Scott, Michael C.
Alfieri, Beth Fratesi, and Thomas L. Dobecki, discusses the geology,
hydrogeology, and water
quality/geochemistry of karst systems in a geologically young, eogenetic
terrain, using Florida karst as an example. Also discussed are
sinkhole-development models; sinkhole risk; eogenetic karst features developed
in rocks as young as 125,000 years and as
old as 65 million years; and selected karst landscapes of Florida, including
regional geology and geomorphology with important examples of karst features,
such as springs, sinkholes, caves, and other karst landforms. The eogenetic
karst of Florida is largely
covered by Plio-Pleistocene sediments, so this book extensively discusses the
interactions of karst processes with sand- and clay-rich cover materials.

The book is available in hardcover, ebook (pdf), and individual chapter pdf
formats from the publisher, Springer International Publishing (
https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783319696348 ),
and in hardcover and ebook formats from major book sellers.

Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS), will occur on 17-21 March 2019 in
Portland, Oregon, USA. The meeting will
include a Karst and Sinkholes Session. For more information visit:

International Course and Field Seminar, Characterization and Engineering of
Karst Aquifers: Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro

The Center for Hydrogeology at the University of Belgrade is happy to offer
the International Course and Field Seminar, Characterization and Engineering
of Karst Aquifers . The seminar will take place in Trebinje, Bosnia and
Herzegovina and Virpazar, Montenegro from 26 May to 4 June 2019 . There is no
registration cost for students, although some small operating costs for trips
and may materials may be charged. For details visit

New Book—Engineering Karstology of Dams and Reservoirs

Dr. Petar Milanović has published a new book: Engineering Karstology of Dams
and Reservoirs. It can be ordered from
https://www.crcpress.com/Engineering-Karstology-of-Dams-and-Reservoirs/Milanovic/p/book/9781498748070
, which contains the following summary:

Karst terrains have been modified and adapted through a range of human
activities as the need for flood control, irrigation, food production,
hydropower production and other resources has increased. Successful
reclamation projects require construction
of dams and reservoirs. Karst terrains present the most complex working
conditions for dam foundation and realization of safe reservoir space.
Practical engineering solutions are extremely complex and the need for
successful solution requires serious investigations
and the cooperation of a wide spectrum of scientists and engineers. A wealth
of data on dam projects in karst has been collected and presented in this
book. Since reservoirs in karst may fail to fill despite extensive
investigations and remediation treatment
the book includes a description of failures as well.

Cave Animal of the Year: Join the Celebration!

Starting in 2009, the Cave Animal of the Year has been designated each year by
the Verband der deutschen Höhlen- und Karstforscher e.V. (German Speleological
Society). This campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of the zoological
diversity in subterranean habitats, which
is little known by authorities and the general public. In 2014, the Cave
Animal of the Year campaign was awarded the France HABE Prize by the
Department of Karst and the Cave Protection of the International Union of
Speleology. For information on the 2019 Cave Animal of the Year and to support
the campaign for this and all following years, please visit
