III International Symposium of Speleology

Laser scanning, the miniaturization of instruments, data loggers, are among the important technological developments to influence modern cave exploration and science. Thus, the theme of the 3rd International Symposium of Speleology is new caving technologies. The symposium will be held on 29 April to 1 May 2017 in the same venue where the 2nd Symposium on speleogenesis was held in 1972: Villa Monastero in Varenna – Lago di Como, Italy. For details, visit www.iss2017.it/eng/.

New book: Hypogene Karst Regions and Caves of the World

The book "Hypogene Karst Regions and Caves of the World" is a project, initiated and coordinated by the Commission on Karst Hydrogeology and Speleogenesis of the International Union of Speleology, as a part of its ongoing HypoKarst project ("Hypogene Karst & Speleogenesis: Nature, Processes, Mechanisms, Manifestations and Applications"). This book is going to be published by Springer, in its series "Cave and Karst Systems of the World". To read this news in full and see the Table of Contents see:

Field trips and registration deadlines!

Sorry for any cross postings.

Cavers, cave and karst scientists and managers, we are now just over six (6) months from the world’s most significant gathering of speleologists from around the world. The 17th International Congress of Speleology (17th ICS) is heading for Australia in July 2017, hosted by the Australian Speleological Federation.

Under its theme, “Caves in an Ancient Land” the 17th ICS, Speleo 2017, will showcase Australia’s caves and karst through an exciting range of pre and post Congress field trips. Note, the deadline for booking these field trips closes on 15 January 2017, just one week away so don’t delay.

Held every 4 years, the ICS attracts hundreds of delegates from around the world with a common interest in caves and karst. Full Congress details, including field trips on offer and accommodation options, can be found on the conference website at https://www.speleo2017.com or on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Speleo2017  If you haven’t already registered you are invited to participate in the 17th ICS, to be held at the world class Penrith Panthers Conference Centre, Sydney, Australia, between 23-29 July, 2017.

The congress program will cater for cave managers or guides, cavers, cave scientists, gear freaks and armchair cavers as well as partners and children. In addition to the formal presentations, there will be competitive events (film, video, photographic, map and speleo-art competitions), social events and field trips.

The pre and post Congress field trips, booked with your registration, are being offered to karst areas in every Australian state as well as in New Zealand and will cover the spectrum from show caves through to stunning wild caves, hard-core vertical and cave diving trips. In short, the congress is aimed at everyone who has an interest in caves and karst.
