The International Year of Caves and Karst: Celebration at UNESCO!

The International Year of Caves and Karst is organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS) to celebrate caves and karst internationally and teach the world about their importance. The most important celebration is speleological history will occur on 13 September 2021 (originally announced as 14 September but changed) in Paris, France, where the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has invited the UIS to celebrate at UNESCO Headquarters!

The details are being developed, but we expect a hybrid celebration to include speakers who cannot attend in person, and live streaming of the celebration. We also expect that the number of attendees in person may be highly limited because of normal security needs at UNESCO and COVID restrictions. We are working to fill the room with as many ambassadors as possible so they can learn about caves and karst and take the information back to their countries. More updates will be posted as soon as they become available.

For more information about the International Year, visit the website (www.iyck2021.org), UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/). We welcome your organization to join our more than 200 International Year partners (http://iyck2021.org/index.php/partners/) and to announce your International Year events and activities at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/.

ERIS 100 Canceled

Dear colleagues,

Given the serious challenges the COVID-19 pandemic is still posing worldwide and that ERIS 100 - The 1st International Karst Science Forum was meant to mark and celebrate the ERIS (Emil Racovita Institute of Speleology) Centennial in 2020, we regretfully announce that the Event, originally scheduled to take place in Bucharest, Romania, in June 2020, and later postponed to 2021, has been entirely canceled.

Having spent months planning the Forum in 2019 and 2020 with our Organizing Committee, keynote speakers, participants, and event partners, we are sincerely disappointed not to be able to greet you in Bucharest. However, we live in unprecedented times when health and human life take absolute priority, and staging a scientific event focused on experiential and dynamic on-site experiences is neither possible nor advisable at this point. To adapt to the new context, we consider the possibility to rethink an international event dedicated to Karst Science in a setting that would best accommodate online attendance.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. Stay healthy and safe.

With warmest regards,

Ioana Meleg

On behalf of the ERIS 100 Organizing Committee

Central Asian Speleological Forum: Canceled

The Central Asian Speleological Forum, which was originally schedule for August 2020 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and then postponed because of COVD-19, has now been cancelled.
