The International Year of Caves and Karst: Many Partners, Many Events

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) was created to teach people around the world about caves and karst. It is an event organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), but the UIS can’t reach the world alone. We now have 154 national and international organizations partnering with us. Together we have 87 events announced around the world and 27 other events are already complete, most of which you can watch or read about at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/.

More partners join us and post events daily. We ask you to be one of them. This is your unique chance to be part of the team that is making a global impact to improve knowledge, and from that, appreciation, funding, and protection for caves and karst. To become a partner is simple. Send you logo and website to the address on the Partners page of the IYCK website (www.iyck2021.org), and then send your event announcements as shown on the Events page. No event is too small. It is all important.

Join us! And visit the UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/).

International Year Events

A growing number of events are scheduled for the International Year of Caves and Karst. You will find the full list at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Some are scheduled throughout the year. One is described below.

We remind everyone that when each event is completed, to please send a short report to the Event Results page on the website (http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/). This page provides links to video lectures, news reports, and other information on the results of all IYCK events. At the end of the IYCK, all the results will be compiled into one document that anyone can use to demonstrate the global interest, value, and support for caves and karst, which we believe will help us all find more support and funding for exploration, research, and protection.

Five Decades of Advances in Karst Hydrogeology

The February 2021 issue of Hydrogeology Journal provides a state-of-the-art overview of advances in karst hydrogeology since the foundation of the International Association of Hydrogeology’s Karst Commission 50 years ago. The guest editors, Drs. Augusto Auler and Zoran Stevanović, collected 29 articles representing 20 countries. This comprehensive collection covers innovative methods and applications, modelling of karst environments, karst protection and global changes, and case studies with wider applicability. It will be useful as a theoretical background to further academic studies and a practical guide to handling the complex geotechnical problems associated with karst regions. All the special issue articles will be freely accessible until 4 April 2021 - please feel free to share the link below with colleagues:

US Cave Laws Updated on NSS Website!

Excellent, useful reference tools! Check out revised reference materials and pdfs at https://caves.org/conservation/laws.shtml

Thanks to Tom Lera’s perseverance, all federal cave protection acts, state cave and archaeology protection statutes, and Puerto Rico cave and archaeology protection statutes are accessible and up-to-date via the NSS Conservation Web Pages. The extensive 2020 research and formatting efforts are recognized with an NSS Certificate of Appreciation to long-time NSS Conservation Team contributor, Thomas Lera.

Call for Papers: Carbonate Critical Zone Petrology, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry in Karst Systems

Dear Colleagues,

As the guest editors of the Minerals Special Issue on “Carbonate Critical Zone Petrology, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry in Karst Systems”, we would like to cordially invite you to contribute (either alone or with a colleague/post-doc, etc.) with research paper or review to this Issue.

Special Issue: Carbonate Critical Zone Petrology, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry in Karst Systems

Guest Editors: Dr. Jason Polk and Dr. Ilenia D’Angeli

Submission Deadline: 30 July 2021 (More time can be granted if necessary)

Website: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/minerals/special_issues/cczpmgks

Should your response be positive, we would appreciate receiving within the next two months a short tentative abstract (150–200 words) describing the topic covered in your contribution. Papers can be submitted at any time up until the deadline as they will be published *on an ongoing basis*.

Minerals is an MDPI open-access journal (indexed in Web of Science, current Impact Factor 2.380). *JCR category rank*: 6/21 (Q2) in Mining & Mineral Processing; 11/30 (Q2) in Mineralogy. The Article Processing Charge (APC) is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs) per accepted paper.

There are numerous benefits to publishing in Minerals: (1) open access and high visibility—unlimited access, broad database coverage, and various promotional activities and academic event presentations; (2) rapid turn-around—The median values of the "Article Processing Time" (from submission to publication) is 42 days in 2019.

Please feel free to contact the Editorial Office ( or ), if you have any questions or concerns.

We very much hope that you can accept this offer and we look forward to hearing from you!

Dear interested caver,

The European Cave Protection Commission would like to remind you that the 6th EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium is planned from the 26th to 30th October 2021.

However, the deadline for the registration will end by the 1st of March. In case that you plan to take part at the symposium, we would like to ask you to register before this date. Also if you would like to share a presentation with us during the symposium, please register ASAP.

Note as well that special funds might be given for travel and accommodation if you request them.

14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst Goes Virtual

We announce that in spite of our expectation, the pandemic conditions have not changed significantly, and probably will not change soon. Consequently, the restrictions related to this situation likely will not allow us to gather and meet for the 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst as originally planned at Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Chęciny) in Poland. So, the Symposium will be held online, via internet.

This creates at least one important disadvantage: the Symposium participants will not visit picturesque region with its crags and caves. But it bears also great benefits: Symposium participants will be able to have presentations and to watch these presentations sitting in their rooms, without wastage of their time for a travel and money (since the participation will be free). This changes the organisation/schedule of scientific sessions, which will be held on 23rd April 2021, and new active participants having presentations are invited.

So, the new registration form for potential participants will be posted soon to the Symposium website, along with other updates: 14pseudokarst.wonders4you.com. Please register by 15 March 2021.

Sincerely yours

Jan Urban

President of the UIs Pseudokarst Commission
