Тема: Cave and karst news and announcements from NCKRI

Dear Friends,

Three are three important announcements to bring to your attention in the news below:

  1. The International Year of Caves and Karst Planning Guide is now available. The International Year will be the most important event in the history of caves and karst, but only if you are involved to make it a success. Read more below to learn how.

  1. Major fires across Australia have ravaged homes, lives, and ecosystems. Because of its importance, we are reposting the message below to encourage donations of funds to help the Australian Speleological Federation restore damaged cave ecosystems.

  1. Also reposted from our previous message, our hearts go out to the people of Puerto Rico hurt by recent earthquakes. NCKRI is organizing the next Sinkhole Conference in April in Puerto Rico, The airport, hotel, and everything is functioning normally. The conference will not be affected by the earthquakes. However, we asked our friends in Puerto Rico, “What can we do to help you recover from the disaster?” They answered, “Come to the Sinkhole Conference! Come to Puerto Rico!” The economic benefit from the money you spend in hotels, restaurants, and attending the conference has a huge effect. And when you return home and tell people that Puerto Rico is beautiful, safe, and open for business and tourism, that will help even more. For more information about the conference and to register, see the announcement below.

International Year of Caves and Karst: Time to Start Planning!

This will be the biggest and most important speleological event ever, but only if you participate. The purpose of the International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) is to teach the world about the importance of caves and karst. Public understanding and support of caves and karst is currently very limited. As a result, funding, regulations, and opportunities for exploration, research, and management are also very limited.

The International Union of Speleology (UIS) has declared 2021 as the IYCK in a major effort to make the world aware of how caves and karst are valuable to all people. To make the IYCK a success, the UIS is calling on all of its member countries and other organizations to begin planning a series of public lectures, programs, demonstrations of techniques, and others activities for 2021. To get involved, download the newest UIS Bulletin from http://www.uis-speleo.org/downloads/uis-bulletins/uisb612.pdf. It has the IYCK Planning Guide which will teach you all you need to know about how to join the IYCK. The Planning Guide will also be posted soon on the IYCK website at http://www.iyck2021.org/.

The IYCK has incredible potential to advance speleology in many and great ways, but only if we all work together to make it possible.

Known impacted cave areas:

Western Australia:

Yanchep (north of Perth)

New South Wales:

Jenolan Caves: most of the above-karst forested areas and extensive areas of the World Heritage Area around Jenolan Caves. Caves House was saved by the efforts of fire crews, two staff houses and the cavers cottage as well as the fire brigade shed were all destroyed.

Yarrangobilly Caves: most of the vegetation above the karst and caves has been severely burnt. Amazingly, the heritage Caves House was saved by six people.

Wombeyan Caves: all vegetation burnt but visitor facilities appear to have been saved.

Kempsey -Willi Willi Maternity Bat Cave and associated rainforest.

Bungonia: extensive damage to forest in the caves area.

Most remote karst areas in NSW have been severely burnt.

Victoria:

Buchan Caves Reserve, and surrounding cave reserves are all extensively burnt. Most public facilities in the Buchan Caves Reserve have been destroyed. Numerous buildings in Buchan village have been destroyed.

Budj Bim (Mt Eccles National Park) World Heritage Area (cultural site).

South Australia:

Kelly Hill Caves and many areas on Kangaroo Island.

These are only some of the areas known to be impacted – we anticipate many more caves have been or will be affected.

LET'S JOIN TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Funds raised will go directly towards:
- Projects aimed at cleaning and restoring caves and karst areas
- Immediate on ground works to cave affected areas
- Cave entrance stabilisation, fencing and stairway replacements (that are not covered by insurance)

Guadalupe Mountains Annual Youth Poster Contest Celebrates Public Lands

Public lands are the best places to enjoy your time outdoors! Whether you like to hike and explore the wilds of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, or ride mountain bikes through Bureau of Land Management public trails, public lands are here for you to enjoy! This year Guadalupe Mountains is partnering with the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to celebrate recreation on public lands. Guadalupe Mountains is proud to host our annual youth poster contest with the theme of “Recreation for All!” Bring your sense of adventure and creativity, come discover the outdoors and enter the contest. Public lands offer many opportunities for healthy outdoor discovery; hiking, fishing, camping, caving, wildlife viewing, boating and cycling. These are just a few of the many ways you can experience public lands.

From January – April 30, 2020, youth ages 6-17 years can submit artwork they have created to show their favorite recreational activity on public lands. The contest is FREE to enter. Participants can draw or paint their favorite memory of exploring public lands through the many different recreational opportunities.  If you like to hike, bike, fish, photograph, explore caves, or even draw as you relax outdoors; recreate your experience on paper or canvas and enter the contest. However you wish to express yourself, the memory does not have to take place at Guadalupe Mountains or on BLM lands. Although we encourage you to come for a visit!  To help plan your visit go to our website at www.nps.gov/gumo  or www.blm.gov/programs/recreation. All poster submissions must be on at least an 8 1/2" x 11" poster board or paper. Suggested media can be crayons, pastels, acrylic paint, color pencils, markers, pen and ink or tempera paint.

Entries can be delivered to the Pine Springs Visitor Center in the park, Carlsbad National Park Headquarters in Carlsbad, New Mexico or mailed to: Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Attn: 2020 Poster Contest - 400 Pine Canyon Drive, Salt Flat, Texas 79847.  The winning entry will receive prizes from Western National Parks Association and the winning art will be featured on the 2021 Guadalupe Mountains Annual Park Pass.  Honorable mentions, prizes and recognition will also be awarded in three age categories. 2020 International Karstological School “Classical Karst” Regional Karstology - Local and General Aspects: Slovenia

The Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU is organizing the 28th International Karstological School “Classical Karst” in Postojna, Slovenia, on 15-19 June 2020. This year’s topic is Regional Karstology - Local and General Aspects.

Since 1993, the International Karstological School “Classical Karst” (IKS) has been organized annually, covering many aspects related to karst research. The basic idea of the event is to present the state-of-the-art of the annually selected topic and to promote discussion between participants via a set of invited and topic-related lectures, a poster session and field trips to the Slovenian Classical Karst area.

The 28th International Karstological School will be focused on regional karst studies. Karst is distributed in most continents and climatic regimes. Most of what we know on karst is based on regional studies. These have direct implications in development challenges of a particular region, however, their broader relevance and validity of regional results may be questionable. Results of regional studies thus, may or may not be generally valid. Regardless of what your topic is (geomorphology, geology, hydrology, biology, speleology, …) we encourage you to present your regional study and discuss its results in view of their relevance to other karst systems.

Thank you very much and kind regards,

US National Speleological Society Convention: Call for Geology and Geography Abstracts

The NSS Section of Cave Geology and Geography is accepting abstracts for presentations at the Geology and Geography Session of the 2020 NSS Convention, to be held July 27 – 31, 2020 in Elkins, West Virginia. Each year, the Geology and Geography Section of the NSS hosts talks featuring the latest research in geology, hydrology, speleogenesis, and many other topics related to caves and karst. All abstracts will be considered to be for oral presentations unless a poster presentation is specifically requested. At this time, we have not reserved poster space, but could accommodate a poster session if there is sufficient interest and enough advance notice is given to convention organizers. As we did last year, we also encourage interested researchers to bring posters from other conferences such as GSA, AGU, and ICS that may be of interest to attendees at convention. This provides an additional opportunity to share your work with your colleagues.

Abstracts may be no more than 250 words in length (this limit must be strictly met). In addition to the text, the abstracts should contain the title of the paper, and the name(s), address(es), and email address(es) of the author(s). The abstracts should be informative summaries that include the conclusions, and not lists of topics that "...will be discussed." Bibliographies and references should not be given in the abstracts. Papers may be submitted for either oral presentation as a poster. Please specify your preference when submitting your abstract.

Please send any questions and your abstracts to:

Katherine Schmid at

The deadline for abstracts is June 12, 2020. Early submissions are encouraged. Confirmation notes will be sent to everyone sending an abstract. Details on presentations times, dates, and other information will be sent to all confirmed participants after the deadline. For online details about the convention, visit: https://nsscon2020.org/. The talks are twenty minutes long and include time for questions.

Please email me if you have any questions and feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might be interested.
