The International Year of Caves and Karst: Over 100 Events Completed!

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) was created to teach people around the world about caves and karst—and we are succeeding. Today we reached over 100 completed events! Most events you can watch at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/, which has become an incredible library of video lectures and information about caves and karst from around the world. Go look!

But the work isn’t finished. As one of our partners wrote to me, “Let's continue to work to reach 1000!” That’s a great idea and for that we need your help. As you plan events or activities, no matter how small, please announce them on http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Use the simple format on that page to write your announcement, it will take less than 5 minutes, and send your announcement to our excellent web manager whose address is at the top of the page. Together, we can teach the “hole” world!

The International Year is organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS). We now have 189 national and international organizations partnering with us. Join us! And visit the UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/) for news and more information.

Fluorescent Dye Tracing: Applied Methods for Environmental Solutions: Live Webinar Series

This webinar series will be conducted by on Wednesdays in May 2021 from 11 a.m. -12 p.m. US Central Daylight Time and will include the following sessions:

Introduction to Applied Karst Hydrogeology,  May 5

Dye Tracing Tools and Techniques Part 1,  May 12

Dye Tracing Tools and Techniques Part 2, May 19

Dye Tracing Applications: Case Studies from the US and Abroad, May 26

Fluorescent dye tracing is used to study groundwater movement in a variety of applications.  In some settings, including but not limited to karst aquifers, this methodology is usually the first step in obtaining information about aquifer characteristics to support monitoring, pollution prevention, water resource management, contaminant source tracing, and remediation planning. This live webinar series will not only introduce karst hydrogeology principles but also walk participants through the process of planning and conducting a dye trace across applications in various geologic settings, give recommendations on how to avoid common problems, and explain how to interpret tracer test results. Dye tracing case studies and how to combine water quality and hydrologic monitoring methods with groundwater tracing will also be presented.  While the presentations will be integrated and we recommend attending the full series, each session can be viewed independently.  Continuing education units (CEUs) are available, 0.1 units per session or 0.4 units for the entire series.

Many journal papers are available for download for a fee. However, for its first 50 days the new report, Speleology as an analogue to space exploration: The ESA CAVES training programme, is available for free download.  Prepared by Francesco Sauro, Jo De Waele, Samuel J. Payler, Marco Vattano, Francesco Maria Sauro, Leonardo Turchi, and Loredana Bessone, this paper is interesting, fun, and informative about a new use of caves. US National Speleological Society Convention Goes Virtual

The National Speleological Society (NSS) of the USA has postponed its annual convention to 26-30 July 2021. The convention will also be held virtually so anyone around the world will be able to attend! For more details, visit http://nss2021.caves.org/.

NSS Convention Cave Geology and Geography Session: Call for Papers

The NSS Section of Cave Geology and Geography is accepting abstracts for presentations at the virtual Geology and Geography Session of the 2021 NSS Convention, to be held July 25 – 30, 2021. Each year, the Geology and Geography Section of the NSS hosts talks featuring the latest research in geology, hydrology, speleogenesis, and many other topics related to caves and karst. All abstracts will be considered to be for oral presentations unless a poster presentation is specifically requested. At this time, we have not reserved poster space, but could accommodate a poster session if there is sufficient interest and enough advance notice is given to convention organizers. As we did last year, we also encourage interested researchers to bring posters from other conferences such as GSA, AGU, and ICS that may be of interest to attendees at convention. This provides an additional opportunity to share your work with your colleagues.

Abstracts may be no more than 250 words in length (this limit must be strictly met). In addition to the text, the abstracts should contain the title of the paper, and the name(s), address(es), and email address(es) of the author(s). The abstracts should be informative summaries that include the conclusions, and not lists of topics that "...will be discussed." Bibliographies and references should not be given in the abstracts. Papers may be submitted for either oral presentation as a poster. Please specify your preference when submitting your abstract.

The deadline for abstracts is June 5, 2021. Early submissions are encouraged. Confirmation notes will be sent to everyone sending an abstract. Details on presentations times, dates, and other information will be sent to all confirmed participants after the deadline. For online details about the convention, visit: http://nss2021.caves.org/. The recommended length for the talks is twenty minutes. Speakers will need to record their talks before the convention.
