It is the largest cave system in the German Federal State of Hesse and one of the most important caves in Germany at a surveyed length of 5.006 mand a depth of 82 m. It was discovered in 1993 and exploration had many interruptive phases. Repeated spectacular discoveries were made in recent time. In particular the size of galleries and extensive speleothems seek for their equals. The German Journal Mitteilungen des Verbandes der deutschen Hhlen und Karstforscherin has a description of the Herbstlabyrinth section of the case system and its characteristics as well as an assesment of its genesis.
