Message 2: News of the Souterrains web site itself
- The Souterrains website is undergoing a complete face-lift. I am working
on a frame setup that has the advantage of easier and faster acces to the
ever growing amount of information. In a couple of weeks all the pages will
be replaced by the frame-based pages. The page to enter the Souterrains web
will not change.
- A guestbook has been added a couple of days ago. This was made possible as
my Internet Service Provider (XS4ALL) made this possible. So for everybody
who wishes to leave a message, feel free to enter your contribution.
- The "Souterrains on Mars" provoked a lot of reactions, all of them very
positive. It made the Souterrains web site a very well visited site for a
couple of days. On a normal day the hitrate is about 300, but this
"Souterrains on Mars" made the hitrate rise to over 25 thousand in 6 days.

Message 4: UNDER GROUND
Who am I? A Canadian independent filmmaker. Here?s the short strokes from my
resum?.

Murray Battle trained as a filmmaker at York University, specializing in
scriptwriting and directing. He spent an inordinate amount of time on
documentary and sponsored projects through the late seventies and early
eighties. For the last decade he has concentrated on broadcast driven
projects, primarily long form documentary and drama. Murray has also been a
pioneer in Canada in interactive multimedia and has recently been seduced by
the world of advertising. As well, for short periods of time, he has
imparted his knowledge by "teaching" at the Canadian Screen Training
Institute in Ottawa. Battle has worked for the National Film Board of
Canada, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, TV Ontario, the Public
Broadcasting Corporation, the British Broadcasting Corporation, Saatchi &
Saatchi and many other private companies.

Subject areas to date have included: forestry, colour field art, men in the
90?s, political hostage takings, Soviet labour camps, a painter who walked
on the moon, a year in the life of a United Empire Loyalist family, police
sensitivity training, a man obsessed with the movies, electronic mail, hard
and soft rock tunneling ...

It?s the latter, industrial films made almost 20 years ago for a tunneling
company that introduced me to the world underground. A place that?s haunted
me ever since. I want to go back.

The proposed film "UNDERGROUND: People who work, live and seek refuge under
the earth" is pretty self-explanatory. But why am I really doing it?

Well, I maintain that there?s something about being underground that?s ...
different. Unsettling to some, comforting to others but very different than
being aboveground.

And a very diverse group of people go there, many with different reasons.
But they?re a breed apart. And they?re interesting.

There?s a movie there. Probably a long form documentary. Now I have to find
the characters and the locations. And hopefully that?s where you might be
able to help. Maybe you?re one of these people.
Maybe you know others. My wish lists are incomplete. Help me add to them.

I?m looking for anyone who spends time underground. They could include:
        - A Sandhog
        - A Spleunker or Caver
        - A Transit Authority Policeman or Social Worker
        - A Berm Dweller
        - A "Homeless" Person who lives underground
        - A Vietnam Vet who was a tunnel rat
        - A Subway System Archivist
        - A Cataphile
        - A tour guide

I?m also looking for great underground venues:
        - Forgotten subway stations
        - Catacombs
        - Caves
        - Underground homes
        - Service tunnels with a history
        - Abandoned bomb shelters

And any other sources would be appreciated. Books, periodicals, first person
accounts, web sites. Help me learn about the incredible world underground
and I promise I'll make a film that reflects it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to your comments
and suggestions.

Cave Clan is a group in Australia who explore Storm Water Drains, Army
Bunkers, Bridge rooms, Mines, Caves, Industrial Sites, Railway Tunnels and
probably lots of others things that I cant remember off the top of my head.
We have been going for 11 years and would have approx 100 members in 5
cities. We also have a bi-monthly newsletter/magazine. We would be
interested in being added to your mailing list.
We also have a web page at http://www.squonk.net/users/kriste/drains/drain.html

Message 8: Souterrains and the Kama Sutra
David Ferris sent me a translation of part of the
Kama Sutra; "On the arts and sciences to be studied".
The article gives a list of some 65 arts and sciences that a woman should
study before marriage, and after it they should continue to do so with the
consent of her husband.
The list contains very respectable arts and sciences like carpentry, making
artificial flowers, dancing and many more. Somewhere in the middle there is
noted: "Knowledge of mines and quarries". It is therefor proven that mines
and quarries are ammongst the great arts and sciences in the world.
The article ends with the remark that a woman, endowed with a good
disposition, beauty and other winning qualities, and also versed in the
above arts, receives a seat of honour in an assemblage of men and she is
respected by the king, and praised by learned men.

Message 11:
SOK Mededelingen 27 is published. This publication by the Dutch/Belgian
Studygroup Subterranean Limestonequarries has 48 pages and 5 articles. The
first article compares two techniques of quarrying limestone as used in the
Limburg limestone quarries. The second article is a description of the now
disappeared catacombs in the Jezuits cave in Maastricht. Parts of the Roman
catacombs were copied in the limestonequarries in the last century. The
third article is a description of a modern technique to quarry limestone in
France (Soissons). The fourth article deals with a survey that took place in
two quarries in the Limburg region. The last article is geological and deals
with the pressure that the overburden put on the pillars, and the way the
pillars deform, and eventualy collapse.
