CONFERENCE ON SOUTERRAINS STUDY - NEW INFORMATION

       FIRST RUSSIAN MEETING ON SOUTERRAINS DISCOVERY AND PRESERVATION

The Russian National Speleonautic Society and Staritza town Administration
announces this event, which will be held in Staritza 20-22 June 1997.

There will be conference on the discovery, exploration, and preservation
of the artificial caves.

The conference program (on 10 Mar 97):

Conference will be organized in sections.
Here are titles of general presentations.
1. History.
 - The history of Staritza
 - The history of limestone mining in Russia
2. Souterrains study
 - Souterrains study in Russia
 - Methods for finding quarries.
 - Technique for opening lost quarries.
 - Summary of the undergrounds in France
3. Social and Ecology
 - Russian underground movements of 70-90s.
 - Tourism and ecology
4. Speleobiology, Speleotherapy and Speleonautics.
 - The history of speleonautic science.
 - Biorhythms of underground fauna.

Some topics within sections:
History.
 - The history of limestone mining in Tula region.
Souterrains study.
 - Film about exploring and opening of the quarry near Moscow.
 - Demonstration of underground navigation and communication computer system.
Speleonautics, speleobiology and speleomedicine.
 - Phenomenons of underground.

The following underground and town trips are planned :
Kapkan and Sel'tso quarries - limestone mining technique of XIX century.
Staritza architecture and history memorials.

The final dinner provided by town - 'The menu of Ivan The Terrible'

Presentations on the conference topics are welcome.
Contributions to the Meeting will be accepted until May 1997.
