| This symposium will highlight natural and cultural research occurring in, around, or relevant to resource management, groundwater quality, and the well-being of all life in the Mammoth Cave Region. It is to be a forum for natural and cultural resource managers, scientists and cooperators, and other interested parties to learn, network, and coordinate science and management efforts. We hope that through expanded knowledge, capacity, and professional networks built in this symposium, federal, state, and local public lands managers and researchers are better prepared to address future questions that will support the resilience of our communities and shared resources. |

Position Summary New Mexico Tech seeks an interdisciplinary and collaborative professional for the Cave and Karst Management Specialist at the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) in Carlsbad, NM. This subject matter expert will focus on one of the Institute's founding tenets, resource stewardship. Reporting to the Director of NCKRI, the selected hire's key responsibilities will be to provide professional leadership in facilitating National Park Service related cave and karst management, while advising NCKRI staff on NPS-related research needs. In filling this position, we are excited to bring in a team member who: 1. Brings a breadth of knowledge of cave and karst resource management 2. Understands federal cave management practices and policies 3. Communicates effectively to identify and address cave and karst resource needs 4. - with experience in groundwater hydrology
- who preferably have an expressed interest in karst systems, and
- who will contribute to our BS Geology, BS Environmental Science, and MS Environmental Science degrees in research and teaching.

Summary Every year the Geological Society of America (GSA) serves the geoscience community with a conference that fosters collaboration and opportunities for students, educators and professionals. This year’s conference was held in Anaheim, California. Over 56+ posters and presentations were on cave and karst topics from multiple disciplines. NCKRI had a total of three talks and one poster presentation. We also had representation in the session: “New Frontiers in Cave and Karst Science”. Dr. Daniel S. Jones was elected to be a Fellow of the Geological Society of America in recognition of his work as a geobiologist and his support of students and early career geoscientist. |

Inspired by Science STEM This month NCKRI hosted the Inspired by Science’ STEM Experience event where many families and kids had the opportunity to learn about different topics in science through educational booths. NCKRI’s booth featured a cave display where participants added to the cave by coloring or drawing a cave organism. Depending on the cave zone they live in, these organisms were added to the entrance zone, the twilight zone or the dark zone. A big thank you to everyone who participated in the event. |
