Funding Opportunities

NCKRI Seed Grant

The National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) is pleased to announce our next call for grants in support of cave and karst research. Please see the attached request for proposals (also linked in the description below). 

 

The NCKRI National Seed Grant Program is designed to enable investigators to initiate new cave and karst research, and incentivize new principal investigators to enter the field. We especially encourage projects within the National Park System. Proposals for NCKRI National Seed Grants are due May 17th, 2023. US Forest Service Cave and Karst Geology Assistant

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents over 17 years old. 

Preference is given to individuals enrolled in institutions of higher education, especially minority-serving institutions.

The USDA Forest Service - Resource Assistant Program is accepting applications for Geologist Assistant internship position with a focus on caves and karst. The Resource Assistants Program (RAP) is a rigorous and immersive, paid internship for individuals interested in conservation, natural and cultural resources, environmental management, research and development, and more.

 

This project seeks a RAP participant to assist with the administration of the caves & karst program and geoscience internships in the USDA Forest Service (FS). Work will involve GIS/LiDAR, research, data management, communication, writing, web content development, and information sharing. The internship will focus on the management and/or assessment of geologic resources, especially cave and karst. The participant will also assist with the management of a national geoscience internship. The goal of the project is to provide support to Forest Service units as they make management decisions regarding caves and karst landscapes. The participant will have the opportunity to work with program leads at the Washington Office: Minerals and Geology Management Office.

International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre

Hydrogeology 101: Introduction to Groundwater Science and Engineering 

Hydrogeology 101, written by Neven Kresic, is a college textbook introducing basic concepts in groundwater science and engineering with 16 lectures, the duration of a typical one or two-semester course at American universities. It covers introduction to hydrogeology, groundwater use, principles of groundwater flow, aquifers and aquitards, groundwater recharge and discharge including springs, groundwater chemistry, groundwater contamination and remediation, field investigations, groundwater in water supply, and guest lecture on groundwater drought in California by Alex Mikszewski.

National Speleological Society Convention

Karst – Approaches and Conceptual Models 

Did you know the NSS has a fund available to help support students attend convention? It is primarily funded by donations from other convention attendees! More information and the request form can be found below. If you have any other questions please email the Student Support Committee at . If accepted, you will receive a discount code for to use with registration.

 

  1. Support is limited to NSS members that are full-time students aged 18 through 25.
  2. Students must provide a copy of their current student ID & driver’s license.
  3. Requests must be received by April 9th, 2023. 
  4. Support will be up to 1/2 of the cost of registration and will be dependent on available funds
  5. This is independent of the first-time attendee discount.

in 2023 we will meet at the Urwelt-Museum Oberfranken, it is the regional museum for natural history and mineralogy in Upper Franconia.

Founded in 1833 as Kreis-Naturalien-Cabinet, reopened in 1998 as Urwelt-Museum Oberfranken.

The museum in the pedestrian zone of Bayreuth shows on 3 floors the history of the animate and inanimate nature of Upper Franconia by means of many fossils and minerals. The contents are made experienceable, also by numerous hands-on exhibits, for children, adults and professional audience.
