Dear International Year of Caves and Karst Partners and Friends,

I’m late sending this update because I was at the International Congress of Speleology, the largest event for the International Year. Nearly 1,500 people were there. The congress was opened by a special speech by Peter Shadie, the Global Coordinator for World Heritage at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and was closed with a special speech by Melody Burkins, a board member of the International Science Council. It was an honor to receive these speeches from these special guests, which were given in honor of the International Year. They demonstrate the broad and high level of support the International Year has received.

For updates on our progress, we are now up to 263 partner organizations from 51 countries, including 23 international organizations. We also have organized exactly 700 events so far! Our goal of a minimum of 730 by the end of the year (to be able to claim at least one event on average for each day of the two-year International Year period) is within reach. Please remember to send event reports, even for events that happened last year. Over the past month we added 10 new events and half were in 2021 and early 2022. It is important to record each event we organize because together they make a big and positive impact.

As the International Year will close in a few months, I ask and encourage you to help end it spectacularly! Plan and organize events that take advantage of the season and holidays to make them more memorable. There are many possibilities. For example, many of you may organize parties for the end of the year, so include the International Year as part of your festivities!

In closing this month’s message, I am no longer writing you as the president of the International Union of Speleology (UIS). I decided to not run for reelection and we now have an excellent new president in Dr. Nadja Zupan Hajna (). However, at Nadja’s request I am still writing as the International Year coordinator. If you have any questions or needs regarding the International Year, contact me at any time. But if you want to coordinate or work with the UIS in other ways, contact Nadja. She will be happy to receive your messages.
