The International Year of Caves and Karst: Many Partners, Many Events

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) is designed to teach people around the world about caves and karst. It is an event organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), but the UIS can’t reach the world alone which is why we’re excited to have 145 national and international organizations partnering with us.

We also have 66 events announced and 11 other events are already complete, including our Opening Ceremonies which have been already been watched by over 6,300 people. If you missed them, watch them at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzSiErLj5x6viNbvAdehDvA.

The most important thing is that more partners are joining us and posting events daily and we ask you to be one of them. This is a unique chance to be part of a team making a global impact to improve knowledge, and from there, appreciation, funding, and protection for caves and karst. It is simple to join. Just send you logo and website address to the address on the Partners page the IYCK website (www.iyck2021.org), and then send your event announcements as shown on the Events page. No event is too small. It is all important. Based on the news media that has reported on IYCK events of the past month, we have already reached over 10 million people!

Join us! And visit the UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/).

International Year Events

A growing number of events are scheduled for the International Year of Caves and Karst. You will find the full list at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Some are scheduled throughout the year. Two are described below that occur at regular periods.

We remind everyone that when each event is completed, to please send a short report to the Event Results page on the website (http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/). This page provides links to video lectures, news reports, and other information on the results of all IYCK events. At the end of the IYCK, all the results will be compiled into one document that anyone can use to demonstrate the global interest, value, and support for caves and karst, which we believe will help us all find more support and funding for exploration, research, and protection.

  • British Cave Research Association Monthly Seminars. Lectures from leading experts on different topics involving caves and karst. They occur on the first Monday of each month, 19:30 – 21:00 UK time
  • Discover Caves and Karst with the Gran Acuifero Maya Project. Every Tuesday at 19:00 Central Mexico Time, explorers, scientists, cave divers, archaeologists, underwater archaeologists, biologists, photographers, speleologists, videographers, cartographers, educators and conservationists will share their adventures, discoveries and anecdotes in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, in one on one live talks.

Show Cave Lighting Paper Now Available

Funded by Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NCKRI conducted a study on the effect of LED lights on lampenflora, led by our student Zoe Havlena: Lighting effects on the development and diversity of photosynthetic biofilm communities in Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico. The paper is available from:  https://aem.asm.org/content/early/2021/01/12/AEM.02695-20

Fund Raising for Penn Aqua Cave

The Mid-Appalachian Karst Conservancy (MAKC) recently purchased Penn Aqua Cave in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, USA, which is probably the premier water cave in the state.  The Pennsylvania Cave Conservancy (PCC) has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to assist in paying for the property.  PCC will match all donations up to $3,000.00.  Anything received above that amount also be sent along to MAKC, but without the matching funds.  Please consider donating to this worthy cause if you are able.  All donations are tax deductible.

The link to donate if you choose is:  MAKC purchase of Penn Aqua Cave.

Thanks

PCC Treasurer

Cave Research Foundation Graduate Student Grants for Cave and Karst Research

Each academic year, the Cave Research Foundation (CRF) accepts grant proposals for the Philip M. Smith Graduate Research Grant program in cave and karst studies. Proposals may be in any field of the earth, natural, or social sciences if the research addresses topics related to caves or karst. Typically, three to five grants are awarded annually, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 each. Students must be enrolled in a degree-granting institution and preference is given to research directly related to the student's thesis or dissertation project. Competition is open to U.S. and international institutions, but application materials must be in English. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2021. See the full application guidelines and grant conditions at https://www.cave-research.org/grants/.

Characterization and Engineering of Karst Aquifers Course

The Centre for Karst Hydrogeology of the University of Belgrade, supported by UNESCO-IHP and several other institutions, will again organize this course but this year is free, and on-line by Zoom. During the first four days, 11 professors will provide 18 lectures ranging from basic karst hydrogeology to special engineering solutions and their environmental impacts. A special thematic session “Lecturing by Distinguish Guests,, with contributions by 12 eminent karst hydrogeologists, will take place on Day Five. The tentative program and the application form can be found on the website at http://www.karst.edu.rs/en/index.html. This 8th course will be dedicated to the International Year of Caves and Karst and will occur on 1-5 June 2021.

This course will be followed for two days by the multidisciplinary conference “Karst: From Top to the Bottom.” The conference is open to all, but it is especially devoted to younger and talented karst researchers—those preferably, but not limited to, under the age of 40. This event will also be dedicated to the International Year of Caves and Karst. Attendance is free of charge.

International Congress of Speleology: COVID Update

On the 26th of January the French organising committee of the French Speleological Federation (FFS) and Bureau members of the International Union of Speleology (UIS) unanimously decided the following due to the uncertainty on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic:

·       The decision on whether the congress will take place from the 25th July to 1st August 2021 or not will be taken on the 26th of March 2021. After this date it will be clear if the congress continues or will be postponed.

·       The deadline for early bird registration with a discount of about 25% on the price of tickets is extended until the 24th March 2021.

·       In case of postponement of the congress already paid tickets will be refunded or valid for a new date of the congress.

For information see: https://uis2021.speleos.fr/infos/inscriptions-au-congres/

As soon as a final decision has been made this will be communicated to the caving community.
