Тема: Cave and karst news and announcements from NCKRI

Dear Friends,

The new year has not started well for our friends in Australia and Puerto Rico. Major fires across Australia have ravaged homes, lives, and ecosystems. Please see the message below to donate funds and help the Australian Speleological Federation restore damaged cave ecosystems.

The island of Puerto Rico has suffered earthquakes earlier this month. Our hearts go out to those people hurt by this tragedy. NCKRI is organizing the next Sinkhole Conference in April in Puerto Rico, We have checked, and the northside of the island where the conference will be located in San Juan is undamaged. The airport, hotel, and everything is functioning normally. The conference will not be affected by the earthquakes.

We asked our friends in Puerto Rico, “What can we do to help in the recovery from the disaster?” They answered, “Come to the Sinkhole Conference! Come to Puerto Rico!” The economic benefit from the money you spend in hotels, restaurants, and attending the conference has a huge effect. And when you return home and tell people that Puerto Rico is beautiful, safe, and open for business and tourism, that will help even more. For more information about the conference and to register, see the announcement below.

International Training Camp for Young Speleologists: Germany

The next International Training Camp for Young Speleologists will occur in the Schwäbische Alb (Swabian Jura), South Germany, on 1-15 August 2020.

Caves are geotopes and biotopes and therefore sensitive climate archives which are worth exploring. Research and protection of these climate archives and modern cave climates, which are indicators of climate changes, is an actual and important European concern. Speleologists can support the exploration and protection of these climate archives by international cooperation.

Good training is the best base for research and caving activities. Therefore, we offer different training courses and a wide supporting program covering all important caving themes. Due to small group sizes, the training will be very effective. An additional intention of the camp is to meet other young cavers. You can establish ties, talk about your interests, hobbies and culture, and perhaps meet them in their home area and visit karst areas and caves for future joint research.

The camp is intended for young people (recommended age of 16 years or older) who want to start with caving or who already have some experience and want to extend their skills. You must understand German or English language. For more information and register, visit https://www.juhoefola.de/english.html.

Call for the 2020 EuroSpeleo Protection Label

Dear Caving Friends,

The European Speleological Federation (FSE) and its European Cave Protection Commission (ECPC) is very pleased to announce the launching of the 2020 Call for the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. Please find enclosed the application form (deadline for applications 15 June 2020). You can also find the application form on the FSE website: http://www.eurospeleo.eu/en/commissions-en/cave-protection/ecpc-activities/eurospeleo-protection-label.html

The aim of the EuroSpeleo Protection Label is to support active cave protection in the speleo clubs, committees, national commissions, etc., all over Europe and to share this knowledge throughout Europe.

For this reason many cavers and speleological structures are identifying specific solutions which can then be shared with the whole European speleological community, in order to adapt these cave protection solutions for application in other European countries.

The FSE / ECPC would like to recognize quality projects which can help to find better solutions for cave protection among the speleological community by awarding them the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. This award should also involve financial support to allow continuation of the important work that has been carried out by the awarded clubs, committees and commissions, because we all need to preserve the speleological heritage for the next generations.

Please consult the annexed document for all further information and technical rules.

Best regards,

3rd International Planetary Caves Conference: Texas, USA

The 3rd International Planetary Caves Conference is scheduled for February 18–21, 2020 at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas, USA. During the last decade, caves and subterranean features have been discovered on nearly every planetary surface as the spatial resolution of spacecraft instrumentation has markedly improved. To date, planetary scientists have identified more than 200 lunar and several thousand Martian cave-like features. These features allow us to access and examine subsurface without costly deep-drilling payloads. Moreover, caves provide potential habitats for life, including future human habitation on the Moon and Mars.

The 3rd International Planetary Caves Conference captures advances in the current state of the art cave exploration and continues the exchange of knowledge and ideas between scientists and engineers for future cave missions. Topics include:

·       Lunar and Martian cave-like features

·       Types of speleogenic features that may be encountered on other planetary bodies

·       The potential to search for subterranean volatiles and determine subsurface habitability

·       Robotic access and exploration

·       The astrobiology potential of planetary subsurface environments

·       Technologies required for human habitation

Additionally, the conference will provide a forum to discuss the longer-term objective of developing a strategy for research and robotic exploration of caves across the solar system. To register and for more information, visit https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/3rdcaves2020/.

International Year of Caves and Karst: Reminder

This will be the biggest and most important speleological event ever. Your participation as part of the global cave and karst community is crucial. The purpose of the International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) is to teach the world about the importance of caves and karst. Public understanding and support of caves and karst is currently very limited. As a result, funding, regulations, and opportunities for exploration, research, and management are also very limited.

The International Union of Speleology (UIS) has declared 2021 as the IYCK in a major effort to make the world aware of how caves and karst are valuable to all people. To make this possible, the UIS is calling on all of its member countries and other organizations to begin planning a series of public lectures, programs, demonstration of techniques, and others activities for 2021.

The IYCK website is now open at http://www.iyck2021.org/. It is designed to teach the public about caves and karst, and so it has a great amount of educational information. It also has information on how to become involved in the IYCK. Please send the activities you plan for the IYCK to http://iyck2021.org/index.php/contact-us/ so we can post them on the “Events” page of the website. Look at the Partners page, and if your organization is not listed, send your logo and website address and you will be included. If you know of organizations that should be involved, contact them. The website will continue to be updated so save the address.

More details about the IYCK are described in the December 2018 UIS Bulletin (http://www.uis-speleo.org/downloads/uis-bulletins/uisb602.pdf) and they will be updated in next issue of the UIS Bulletin, which will be posted around the end of this year. Updates will also be sent through this and other e-mail lists. If you have questions, suggestions, or want to offer assistance, contact us!

The IYCK has incredible potential to advance speleology in many and great ways, but only if we all work together to make it possible.
