Study Abroad Program: Karst of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is offering a course, GEOL 4650 Field Geology, for the Summer of 2020. This course describes the different types of caves and karst rocks, the water rock interactions in carbonate rock systems, and it explains cave formation via hydrogeological and geochemical processes. It offers field work experience such as sample collection, determining field parameters, karst and cave maps/surveys, and measuring spring discharges in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and laboratory experience on the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi campus. The relationship between the Ring of Cenotes and regional fracture patterns will also be determined in the field.

The purpose of this program is to provide a capstone experience in the field of Geology with a focus on Karst Hydrogeology, Geochemistry and Structural Geology. The base camp will be in Mérida, Yucatán state, Mexico. Several outcrops of highly permeable karst limestone deposits and groundwater seawater mixing locations along the Yucatán coast are within driving distance from Mérida and they will be used for the field work projects.

PhD Student Position in Microbial Karst Aquatic Ecology: Czech Republic

PhD student position in microbial ecology of freshwater karst communities will be open in 2020 at the Department of Aquatic Microbial Ecology, Institute of Hydrobiology, Biology Centre CAS České Budějovice, Czech Republic.

The announced position is within the framework of a research project addressing local and general patterns in microbial communities of surface and subsurface aquatic karst habitats across Europe. Our team will mainly focus on ecological processes taking place in microbial communities of subsurface aquifers and on their role in assembly of microbial consortia of deep lakes.

Description: we are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with strong interest in karst environments and ecology. The offered position will consist of three equally important components:

  • Fieldwork (10-20%) will take place in difficult alpine karst terrain and will include experimental setups and sampling of streams, pools on the surface and in cave environments. The main study site is the karst area Siebenhengste (Switzerland).
  • Lab work (40-50%) will consist of enumeration of microbes with Flow Cytometry, microscopy and CARDFISH analyses; isolation, cultivation and characterization of microbes; and molecular biology techniques (DNA isolation, preparation for subsequent genomic vs. metagenomic analyses, PCR and qPCR).
  • Computational work (40%) will be conducted with amplicon, genomic and metagenomic datasets and will include statistical approaches, tests of ecological concepts and eco-genomics.

The student will have opportunity to select a preferable direction of own research within these described opportunities.

Requirements: Applicants for the position should have a M.Sc. degree in Biology (preferably in Limnology, Microbiology and/or Ecology). A driving license valid in Europe and caving experience, as well as knowledge of ecological concepts would be desirable. Prior experience in linux/unix/perl/python programming would be considered favorably but is not a prerequisite for selection. Candidates must be proficient in English.

Application and Contact: In case of interest, please submit a single PDF file composed of:

  • brief motivation letter with a statement of your research interests
  • detailed CV (including your grades and gained practical experience)
  • copy of the diploma certificate
  • name and contact information for at least one reference.

The position will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found. Applications will be evaluated starting from December 20, 2019. Target start is January - February 2020, although a later start is possible.

Please send your application and/or questions regarding position to the PI of the project Dr. Tatiana Shabarova

and indicate ‘PhD Application’ in the subject line.

Project Background: The mechanisms underlying species distribution in metacommunities represent a challenging topic in microbial ecology. Although the interactions between species-sorting, mass-effects and neutral processes in planktonic communities of surface waters are well understood, both the microbial communities in deeper lake strata (hypolimnion) and mechanisms influencing their assembly are largely unknown. Moreover, the role of groundwaters in formation of freshwater communities remains enigmatic. We aim to uncover microbial community composition and assembly mechanisms during transfers from soil to soil water and along continua of subsurface vs surface streams to a deep lake using amplicon sequencing and metagenomics. Additionally, compositional and functional differences between bacterial assemblages from subsurface vs surface flows, along with accompanying environmental alterations will be investigated. We hypothesize that communities formed by surface and subsurface streams are distinct and subsurface streams provide successful ‘seed’ phylotypes for aphotic, deep lake strata.

The 16th Sinkhole Conference: New Event. Karst Clips!

Are you interested in attending the Sinkhole Conference, but were unable to submit a full paper for publication?  We still want to hear about your projects and research, and offer a new opportunity, less formal than a full paper and talk.

This year, we are organizing a special session called “Karst Clips” that will allow any participant to give a brief presentation about their work.  This session, styled in the manner of “lightning talks” common at many conferences, is designed to broaden participation and content, as well as to provoke discussions among participants.

Details about Karst Clips are highlighted at www.sinkholeconference.com, where you can also register for the conference. Don’t forget, except for one dinner, the registration price includes all of your meals!

The 16th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst, generally called “The Sinkhole Conference,” will be in its most fabulous location yet, the historic city of San Juan and the incredible karst of Puerto Rico from 20-24 April 2020. Access to the conference is also easy, often as cheap or cheaper than flying to many other US locations. A lot of great talks are lined up, as well as field trips, short courses, and more. For all of the details, to register, and also to reserve your hotel room, visit www.sinkholeconference.com.

International Year of Caves and Karst: Reminder

This will be the biggest and most important speleological event ever. Your participation as part of the global cave and karst community is crucial. The purpose of the International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) is to teach the world about the importance of caves and karst. Public understanding and support of caves and karst is currently very limited. As a result, funding, regulations, and opportunities for exploration, research, and management are also very limited.

The International Union of Speleology (UIS) has declared 2021 as the IYCK in a major effort to make the world aware of how caves and karst are valuable to all people. To make this possible, the UIS is calling on all of its member countries and other organizations to begin planning a series of public lectures, programs, demonstration of techniques, and others activities for 2021.

The IYCK website is now open at http://www.iyck2021.org/. It is designed to teach the public about caves and karst, and so it has a great amount of educational information. It also has information on how to become involved in the IYCK. Please send the activities you plan for the IYCK to http://iyck2021.org/index.php/contact-us/ so we can post them on the “Events” page of the website. Look at the Partners page, and if your organization is not listed, send your logo and website address and you will be included. If you know of organizations that should be involved, contact them. The website will continue to be updated so save the address.

More details about the IYCK are described in the December 2018 UIS Bulletin (http://www.uis-speleo.org/downloads/uis-bulletins/uisb602.pdf) and they will be updated in next issue of the UIS Bulletin, which will be posted around the end of this year. Updates will also be sent through this and other e-mail lists. If you have questions, suggestions, or want to offer assistance, contact us!

The IYCK has incredible potential to advance speleology in many and great ways, but only if we all work together to make it possible.
