Short Course KARSYS: Applied and Innovative Methods for the Management of Karst Environment, Slovenia

Date/place:

Saturday 22nd June, 2019, at the 27th International Karstological School “Classical Karst”, Postojna, Slovenia http://iks.zrc-sazu.si/en/

Instructors:

Dr. Pierre-Yves Jeannin, Dr. Arnauld Malard (ISSKA, CH).

This workshop is dedicated to the learning of the KARSYS approach through an application on a pilot site by using the Visual KARSYS web-service which is under development (https://visualkarsys.isska.ch/). Participants will be introduced in theoretical aspects of the approach and in the practical process of its application.

KARSYS is developed for hydrogeologists working in karst regions, in order to address hydrogeological questions in a very pragmatic and concrete way. KARSYS makes it possible to build an explicit conceptual model (3D image) of the karst aquifers and of the associated flow systems. The approach is based on a 3D model of the aquifer synthesizing all standard geological and hydrological data and coupling a series of simple hydraulic principles. This provides, within a limited effort, a consistent hydrogeological conceptual model of karst flow systems within any investigation area. The course is designed for hydrogeologists with basic knowledge on karst, hydrogeology and 3D modelling. Any professional interested in groundwater management, engineering, renewable energies in karst environments will gain a good understanding of karst hydrogeology and a pragmatic way to assess karst hydrogeological systems.

The course will be extended further with an introduction to KarstALEA method, which has been developed for predicting the position and characteristics of karst occurrences within a massif. KarstALEA was initially designed for tunneling, but can be applied to any kind of underground construction in karst areas. At last, an outlook to flow simulation procedures based on KARSYS (KarstFlowSIM) will be presented.

KarstALEA and KarstFlowSIM are both extensions of KARSYS, providing de facto a consistent and continuous workflow in karst to address pragmatic issues.

In case you are looking for a refresher course, or if you have staff and colleagues to train, check out our courses at http://www.batsurveysolutions.com. Don’t miss out on the chance to learn acoustic survey methods and echolocation call data analysis at our field course in Tucson, Arizona, April 8-13 and/or at our classroom data analysis training in Tulsa, Oklahoma, April 26-28 (immediately following the Western Bat Working Group Meeting).

Now that spring has sprung throughout most of the country it’s time to start thinking about summer bat surveys. You can choose join us for an 8-day / 7-night field course in Portal Arizona, Great Basin Nevada or Mammoth Cave Kentucky and get valuable training with combined contact and non-contact methods for the study of bats. All of our venues are top notch for encountering a wide variety of bat species, but the Great Basin location is going to be especially fantastic. So, if you want to brush up on your skills, or send your staff and colleagues to an unforgettable training, consider joining us there in July. 4th International Competition: Karst Under Protection—Gift for the Future Generations, Sofia, Bulgaria

Dear lovers of karst and caves,

I have the honor to announce the opening of the Fourth Edition of the International Competition, Karst under protection – gift for the future generation. The invitation to participate is valid until May 19, 2019.

The new edition of this competition is a part of the program of the International Scientific-practical forum “Protected Karst Territories – Legislation, Tourism and Monitoring” (ProKARSTerra`2019, Sofia, Bulgaria, http://prokarstterra.bas.bg/forum2019) and it is held under the forum’s motto: “Protected karst territories – islands of sustainable development.”

The competition offers 17 rubrics allocated to the traditional five categories, hoping to satisfy the interests of more candidates, according to their abilities. The six evaluation criteria developed along the former competitions are already proven to be effective, and evaluation will be done by an authoritative and impartial international jury.

Detailed information on the conditions for participation and the results from previous editions of the competition can be found on this site. For any questions please use the offered contact addresses.

Let us jointly rediscover karst and with your original works to popularize it among people - they deserve to learn more about this natural phenomenon. Not only because it is unique and attractive and still hides secrets about our planet, but also because it is widespread and its nature and specifics continue to be offensively unknown to our contemporaries.

We wish all the contestants of the competition much inspiration and the very best of luck.

We will be happy to congratulate you at the ceremony session on 29 September 2019 in Sofia as winners in one of the competition categories.

International Student Competition: Karst - the Last White Spot on the Planet Earth

We are pleased to present our new initiative - the international competition "Karst - the Last White Spot on the Planet Earth”. It is designed for students aged 16 to 19, who have a lasting interest in karst, caves and for field research. The competition is organized under the auspices of UNESCO. It is another international initiative of the specialized educational strategy ProKARSTerra-Edu, developed by the Experimental Laboratory of Karstology at National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography – BAS.

This competition is different from other International competitions and Olympiads, and we hope to bring on the interest of students and teachers from all over the world for whom karst and caves are inspirational. The competition regulation provides for active participation of professional karstologists and speleologists as mentors. For more information please check its Internet site: http://prokarstterra.bas.bg/sci-competition.

Let us make together a successful start to a new and inspiring innovative form of karst education. In August we are expecting you in sunny Bulgaria, rich in karst and caves.
