NCKRI Hires a Cave and Karst Management Science Director

Following an international search and the review of many exceptional candidates, NCKRI is delighted to announce that Dr. Patricia Seiser was hired as NCKRI’s Cave and Karst Management Science Director. About 75% of her duties will focus on coordinating cave and karst management activities across the US National Park Service (NPS), and her remaining time will focus on NCKRI-specific cave and karst management programs. Because she will work closely with the NPS, she will work out of the NPS offices in Denver, Colorado, which is also important in expanding NCKRI’s national outreach. She starts her work for NCKRI on 29 March 2021.

The International Year of Caves and Karst: Many Partners, Many Events

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) was created to teach people around the world about caves and karst. It is an event organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), but the UIS can’t reach the world alone. We now have 167 national and international organizations partnering with us. Together we have 93 events announced around the world and 49 other events are already complete, most of which you can watch or read about at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/.

More partners join us and post events frequently. We ask you to be one of them. This is your unique chance to be part of the team that is making a global impact to improve knowledge, and from that, appreciation, funding, and protection for caves and karst. To become a partner is simple. Send you logo and website to the address on the Partners page of the IYCK website (www.iyck2021.org), and then send your event announcements as shown on the Events page. No event is too small. It is all important.

Join us! And visit the UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/).

International Year Events

A growing number of events are scheduled for the International Year of Caves and Karst. You will find the full list at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Some are scheduled throughout the year. One is described below.

We remind everyone that when each event is completed, to please send a short report to the Event Results page on the website (http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/). This page provides links to video lectures, news reports, and other information on the results of all IYCK events. At the end of the IYCK, all the results will be compiled into one document that anyone can use to demonstrate the global interest, value, and support for caves and karst, which we believe will help us all find more support and funding for exploration, research, and protection.

  • Queen’s University Belfast Caving Club March Cave Science Festival. This event is a series of webinars from researchers involved in some way with caves. We will have presentations from hydrologists, geologists and those involved in bat conservation. This event will be a video conference over Microsoft Teams on every evening, local time. Please check our Facebook page for details. Organized by the Caving Club at Queen’s University in Belfast (QUBCC). Scholarships for International Students for the Doctoral Study Program in Karstology: Slovenia

In keeping with the 2020 development cooperation agreements, we succeeded in preparing, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia, a public call for scholarship applications for international students applying for the Doctoral study program in Karstology at the University of Nova Gorica in Slovenia.

Through the award of scholarships to international students in the Republic of Slovenia we aim to promote international education, provide citizens from partner countries with a higher level of education, and help them acquire knowledge in priority areas so that scholarship holders can bring in new knowledge and skills upon their return to home countries, thereby contributing to their long-term sustainable development.

In the 2021/2022 academic year, two scholarships will be awarded to two citizens from recipient or eligible countries for the postgraduate program in Karstology (third level, doctoral degree program) at the Graduate School of the University of Nova Gorica, the only comprehensive Karstology study program in the world.

EU Proposal: Making Nature Restoration Legally Binding

Nature as we know it is heading towards extinction. And it’s because of human activity. Logging, intensive agriculture and overfishing have pushed one million animal and plant species to the point where they're hanging by a thread. The European Commission will propose a new law to make nature restoration legally binding for EU countries. But as it stands, there is no definition of what this will actually mean.

Right now, the Commission is asking the public to give their opinion on what nature restoration across the EU should look like, which is open for feedback until the 5th of April 2021.

BirdLife Europe, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and World Wildlife Fund European Policy Office, have now launched #RestoreNature - a campaign demanding to restore nature across Europe now. The message to the European Commission is simple: Only through meaningful, transformative change at land and sea can we bring back the biodiversity we desperately need. It will help us to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, and prevent the future spread of diseases.

Through the #RestoreNature campaign citizens from both within and outside the EU can demand that the EU develops a good law that can help reverse the fate of nature in Europe, and beyond and start giving land, sea and water back to nature.
This EU law can be a real game-changer for people and nature, but only if it is grounded in science. Failing that, it risks ending up an empty green-washing tool.

This is about the survival of our precious caves and karst beside wetlands, peatlands, grasslands, forests, floodplains, rivers, and oceans. But it is also about our climate, our health, and the survival of humankind. Protecting what is left is needed but won’t cut it. We also need to bring nature back. We must #RestoreNature now. Our survival depends on it.

Being a full member at EEB, European Speleological Federation and its Protection Commission ECPC are strongly supporting this campaign and ask you to sign online at: https://restorenature.eu/en

Please do it now !
