21st SPELEOLOGICAL SCHOOL
Cieszyn-Macocha, February 7th to 13th, 2002
According to the tradition of winter multidisciplinary and international meetings on speleology,
karst and glaciology Laboratory of Research and Documentation of Karst Environment, Department
of Geomorphology, University of Silesia (Poland) invite to participation in 21st Speleological
School. We invite karst experts, young researchers and students to contribute and discuss theory
of karst and contemporary results of their researches.
School will be held in days of February 7th to 13th, 2002 in Conference Centre of the University
of Silesia in Cieszyn (Poland) and in the Moravian Karst (Czech Rep.). Authorities of the
Regional Park Moravian Karst and of the Caves of Moravian Karst are coorganisers of 21st School.
Karst Commission of the International Geographical Union traditionally supports the School.
Topics and goals
February 7th (Thursday) Arrival of participants to the Conference Centre in Cieszyn, at 3 a.m.
opening of the School and general session with 2-3 invited lectures.
February 8th (Friday) Scientific session on karst and related phenomena in glaciers, social
meeting in the evening.
February 9th (Saturday) Scientific session on karst geology and palaeokarst.
February 10th (Sunday) Scientific session on karst hydrology and karst ecosystems.
February 11th to 13th Field excursion to caves of the Moravian Karst (discussion on relation of
show caves in protected areas and terminology of cave rocky features in caves will be the main
focus of the excursion).
To promote discussion as a main tool of the School sessions participants will ask to prepare
their contributions mostly in form of posters. Several karst experts will be asked by organisers
to present key lectures for the sessions. Willing to help young researchers to find relation of
their investigations to the karst science evolution sessions will be accompanied by wider
discussion on history and terminology of karst and speleology.
Traditionally, lectures and sessions will be organised before lunch. Afternoon is provided for
discussions, meetings of working groups' etc. In the evening presentations of videos, slides
will be organised and will be time for reports from conferences and symposiums. Papers presented
on the school will be published in "Kras i speleologia".
Technical informations
Accommodation and meals provide in Conference Centre of the University of Silesia in Cieszyn
(ul. Bielska 62, 43-400 Cieszyn, tel. +48 33 8520931-4). Total cost of stay in the Centre (night
in 1 or 2 bed room and full board) - 25 USD per day and fee - 25 USD (students and PhD students
are free of fee payment) - will be paid at the registration desk.
Total cost of the excursion to the Moravian Karst (accommodation, meals and transport) is 40 USD
(paid at the registration desk). For some countries it is necessary visa to enter Czech Rep. as
well as visa for more than one entry to Poland (from Czech Rep. we will back to Poland again).
To book necessary rooms and to organise well the thematic sessions we are kindly asking you to
confirm your participation by sending fulfilled registration form of proposed contributions as
