| New Open-Access Book: Notable Springs of the United States This new open-access book by Neven Kresic explores notable springs in the United States: their origin, characteristics, historical and current uses, and significance. Some of these springs are among the largest and most spectacular in the world and many were and are sacred to Native Americans. Contemporary and historic photographs reveal their beauty and maps, diagrams, and materials from scientific publications and historic chronicles are included to tell their stories. A must read for groundwater professionals as well as spring or nature enthusiasts. The book is also a call to action to protect springs for their unique beauty and to help the environments that depend upon them. Application review process will begin on December 1st Position Summary New Mexico Tech seeks an interdisciplinary and collaborative professional for the Cave and Karst Management Specialist at the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) in Carlsbad, NM. This subject matter expert will focus on one of the Institute's founding tenets, resource stewardship. Reporting to the Director of NCKRI, the selected hire's key responsibilities will be to provide professional leadership in facilitating National Park Service related cave and karst management, while advising NCKRI staff on NPS-related research needs. In filling this position, we are excited to bring in a team member who: - Brings a breadth of knowledge of cave and karst resource management
- Understands federal cave management practices and policies
- Communicates effectively to identify and address cave and karst resource needs

Apply before December 13, 2024 Position Summary: After more than eight decades of existence, the NSS board and members are excited to seek the organization’s first Executive Director. The Executive Director will oversee all operations of the organization and be responsible for managing and supporting the Division Heads in Communications, Education & Training, Conservation & Science, Facilities, Membership, Operations, and Accounting & Finance. Professional Qualifications & Personal Characteristics: - Passion for the mission of NSS to study and protect caves and to foster connections among those interested in caves.
- Minimum of ten years of relevant management work or volunteer experience. Nonprofit management experience is preferred, along with budgeting, accounting, financial and risk management expertise.
- Outstanding leadership abilities for managing highly skilled staff and volunteers and forging a shared consensus about future direction.
- Demonstrated success in donor relations and fundraising for nonprofit organizations.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with a positive, affable and approachable manner. Cares about the people on the team and their work.
- Ability to build rapport and work effectively with a volunteer board, members, remote teams, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to represent the organization professionally both internally and externally.
- Ability to develop and nurture partnerships with diverse groups, including business and industry, toward common goals.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. An advanced degree is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate strategic program needs and risks, taking the initiative to address them.
- Action-oriented, flexible problem-solver with an ability to manage multiple varied teams, develop solutions to obstacles and resource gaps, embrace and communicate effectively through ambiguity, and drive task completion.
- Willingness to roll up sleeves and ability to overcome barriers and setbacks.
- Able to resolve conflicts within and across teams and Divisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to operate collaboratively in an environment with coworkers using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 products.
- Previous Land Trust experience is a plus.
- Familiarity working with and negotiating with federal and state land management agencies.

Karst Waters Institute: William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science Learn More and Apply by February 15, 2024 The scholarship ($2500) is open to any student who is currently enrolled in, or has been accepted into, a master’s degree program at an institution of higher education in the United States. Visit from the NPS Geologic Resources Division, New Mexico Tech and City of Carlsbad |

NCKRI's Headquarters was visited in early October by staff members of the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD), New Mexico Tech and City of Carlsbad. During these days, NCKRI staff met with Dr. Stephanie Gaswirth, NPS Geologic Resources Division Lead, Mr. Jason Kenworthy, NPS Geologic Resources Division and Mr. Carlos Romero, NMT Associate Vice President - Office of Research to talk about NCKRI's mission and objectives for the following year. The City of Carlsbad and Mayor Rick Lopez hosted a luncheon in celebration of NCKRI's new director Dr. Benjamin Tobin. NMT President Mahyar Amouzegar along with various administrators greeted NCKRI staff members and toured the facilities. They also got a chance to take a tour of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. |
