Upcoming events, announcements, and MORE!

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

I’m writing with two major announcements in addition to our regular news below. The first is that the NCKRI News has improved its appearance and the way we send messages. We hope you like the new look and that it helps you find the information you need more easily. We are also now sending the NCKRI News through Constant Contact, which is designed for such purposes. For years I’ve been sending the NCKRI News though my e-mail address, which is not designed for such use and was blocked by many of your servers. As a result, some of you may be seeing the NCKRI News for the first time. If you do not want to receive these messages, no problem. There is an unsubscribe option at the bottom of this news message. There are also options to update your contact information and to send us your news so we can announce it.

The NCKRI News has never been about news only from NCKRI. Our messages are mostly cave and karst news from our many friends around the world. Together, we can better explore, understand, and protect the world’s caves and karst. Many of you have sent your announcements to me, but that is also changing. When you use the link below, your news will go to Devra Heyer, NCKRI’s awesome Education Program Manager. She will be managing the NCKRI News starting with this message, and you will enjoy working with her has I have.

This leads me to my second and personal announcement. I am retiring from NCKRI at the end of April. It has been an honor to serve as NCKRI’s Executive Director for the past 16 years, and I will continue to support NCKRI for the rest of my life in whatever way I can, but as a volunteer. I do not know who will fill my position or when. NCKRI is administered by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and as soon as the position is open to accept applications, it will be announced in the NCKRI News.

While I am retiring from NCKRI and look forward to slowing down, I am not retiring completely. I will stay involved in cave and karst exploration, research, and teaching and will return to consulting on a part-time basis. My wife and I plan to remain in Carlsbad, New Mexico for the foreseeable future.

I thank you for your support of NCKRI and hope you will please give the new Executive Director your full support too.

George Veni, PhD

Karst – Approaches and Conceptual Models

The Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU has have been organizing the International Karst School "Classical Karst" in Postojna, Slovenia, since 1993. The school offers a framework in which both, young and established karstologists from all over the world present new research in the field of karstology, socialize, and get to know Classical karst. Every year, we choose a leading topic, the history and state of research of which are presented by invited lecturers, while the other participants present their research in the form of lectures or posters.

The school also offers afternoon and full-day excursions, where the leading theme is presented in the field sites of the Classical Karst. The last full-day excursion is entirely dedicated to the general presentation of the most important areas of the Classic Karst.

This year we are celebrating the School's 30th anniversary. The school will be officially opened on Monday, June 19th, and officially closed with a gala dinner accompanied by live music on Thursday, June 22nd. We have invited eminent and world-renowned scientists and researchers who, with their contribution to science, have charted the path to karstology as we know it today.

Announcements

 White-Nose Syndrome National Meeting: USA

The US Fish and Wildlife Service, in coordination with its partners, is pleased to announce that the 2023 White-nose Syndrome (WNS) National Meeting will be held from June 5th – 8th, 2023, in Palm Springs, California, USA.

Plenary sessions will be scheduled daily, with opportunities for questions and discussion following presentations. Presentations will focus primarily on research in disease management, bat health and improving survival, updates on Pd surveillance and diagnostics, and technological advances in bat monitoring. Additional topics will be considered for inclusion.

Presentations will be recorded, however access to recordings after the meeting concludes will be at the sole discretion of the presenters. Not all presentations are guaranteed to be available.

The meeting will feature in-person working sessions focused on topics such as conservation planning for species that have been heavily impacted by WNS, planning WNS treatment and management actions, and developing strategies for western species that are at-risk of WNS impacts. A poster session will be held for in-person attendees. Posters may be available through our virtual platform at the discretion of the presenter.

Please note that in person participation at this meeting is limited. Expression of interest (or registration) is welcome but acceptance of in person attendance is not guaranteed. The planning committee will evaluate interest, geographic and agency representation, topic expertise and contribution, venue capacity and other factors in determining in person attendance.

 Sinkhole Conference: Special Guests!

The Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst (usually referred to as “the Sinkhole Conference”) always includes three groups of special guests. The first is our invited speakers, that we’ve promoted for some time and which you can learn about by selecting from the menu under “Invited Speakers” at the top of http://www.sinkholeconference.com/. The other groups have not been introduced until now.

The second group is six students selected for the honor of receiving the Beck Award, named after the conference founder Dr. Barry F. Beck. The award includes free registration to the conference and reimbursement of up to $1,000 in travel expenses. To learn about this year’s awardees, visit http://www.sinkholeconference.com/sites/sinkholeconference.com/files/2023-03/Beck%20Biographies_GMP.pdf. The expenses for these fine young scholars are largely supported through your tax-deductible contributions to the Beck Student Support Fund. To learn more and make a donation, visit http://www.sinkholeconference.com/How-to-sponsor-the-scholarship.

This conference is the longest-running international conference of its type. Since 1984, engineers, geologists, hydrologists, land managers, biologists, and many others have gathered at these meetings to exchange cutting-edge information on karst and its many benefits and challenges. One of its many benefits is the opportunity to meet the second group of special guests, our sponsors and exhibitors:

Our Sponsors for this year’s conference are:

  • Arcadis US Inc.
  • Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District
  • MicroSeismic, Inc.
  • P.E. LaMoreaux and Associates
  • Southwest Geophysical Consulting, LLC
  • University of South Florida School of Geosciences

And our Exhibitors are:

  • Albillia LTD.
  • Earth Tech
  • Geologic & Environmental Testing
  • GeoView, Inc.
  • SurvTech Solutions

If you have not yet registered, it isn’t too late (and you can even register on site) to come meet our special guests and our registrants from around the world. The 17th Sinkhole Conference will be held at the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida March 27-31, 2023.

To register for the conference and for more information, visit http://www.sinkholeconference.com/.
