The International Year of Caves and Karst: More than 200 Partners!

The International Year of Caves and Karst is organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS) to celebrate caves and karst internationally and teach the world about their importance. This is a huge job. It cannot be done alone, which is why we excited to announce we now have more than 200 national and international organizations partnering with us—202 to be exact!

Look at our list of partners at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/partners/. Of course, most are cave organizations, but you will find many and major non-speleological organizations too. This is critically important because they show that caves are important to everyone. If your organization hasn’t joined, please do. There is no cost or application process. All you need to do is simply send your logo and website address to the website manager, whose address is near the top of the Partners page, and then we ask you to organize one or more events, programs, activities, or publicity in your area to help us reach and teach the world.

We also continue to make progress through our partners with our events. We have had 187 successful events so far (http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/), and another 124 are coming soon (http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/). We encourage you to plan your own events and activities for the International Year, no matter how small, and please and send them in the simple format to the website manager. It will take less than 5 minutes, and you can help teach the “hole” world!

For more information, visit the International Year website (www.iyck2021.org), UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/) for news and more information.

2021 Call for the EuroSpeleo Protection Label

Dear Caving Friends,

The European Speleological Federation (FSE) and its European Cave Protection Commission (ECPC) are very pleased to announce the launching of the 2021 Call for the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. Please find enclosed the guidelines and application form (deadline for applications 30 June 2021). All documents may also be found on the FSE website: http://www.eurospeleo.eu/en/commissions-en/cave-protection/ecpc-activities/eurospeleo-protection-label.html

The aim of the EuroSpeleo Protection Label is to support active cave protection in the speleo clubs, committees, national commissions, etc., all over Europe and to share this knowledge throughout Europe.

For this reason, many cavers and speleological structures are identifying specific solutions which can then be shared with the whole European speleological community in order to adapt these cave protection solutions for application in other European countries.

The FSE / ECPC would like to recognize quality projects which can help to find better solutions for cave protection among the speleological community by awarding them the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. This award should also involve financial support to allow continuation of the important work that has been carried out by the awarded clubs, committees and commissions, because we all need to preserve the speleological heritage for the next generations.

Please consult the documents on the website for all further information and technical rules.

Best regards,

Jean-Claude Thies

Roman Lamps in Caves: Request for Help

Following the discovery of a Roman bronze lamp (https://skfb.ly/o6Fvn), with its preserved contents, in the Azé Cave (France), we are looking for documentation on Roman bronze lamps discovered in caves, whatever the country, in order to make a bibliographic synthesis. We are also looking for publications on cave sanctuaries during the Roman period and especially the 1st Century BC and the 1st Century AD.

If you have knowledge of such discoveries or documentation, thank you in advance for your help in communicating this information to us.

Submission Deadline: November 30, 2021

We invite you to submit your article to this special collection, which focuses on the current state of planetary cave science, including:

  1. how we identify and characterize planetary caves,
  2. which processes are behind their genesis and what we can learn from terrestrial analogs,
  3. the potential for planetary caves as habitats for life and
  4. how we may explore these windows into the subsurface.

This special collection welcomes recent advances in geology, geophysics, astrobiology, environmental science regarding planetary caves. This knowledge will be the baseline for future space missions and will help the community to set scientific goals and technological solutions for the exploration of planetary caves.

19th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology Update: Italy

Hello Everyone

I am pleased to advise that the 19th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology (ISV) will take place as scheduled from Saturday 28 August to Friday 3 September 2021.

The Gruppo Grotte Catania (GGC), which is organising the symposium, has decided that with the COVID situation in Italy now improving, it will be possible to host the Symposium in Catania. However, it has been necessary to make some changes to the program.  The organisers have placed some new information about the Symposium on the ISV19 Website.  I have copied it here for your convenience:

Dear friends, speleologists, scholars and supporters of volcano-speleology,

Finally, here is the news you have been waiting for: the 19th International Symposium on Volcano- speleology in Catania is on! It took us longer than we had expected because we had to face problems we have never encountered before and consequently had to make difficult decisions, in accordance with civil and speleological institutions.

In Italy the COVID-19 situation is now under control: the infection is decreasing rapidly because of the vaccine campaign (to this day, 10 million people had both shots, and 20 million more had their first shot out of a population of 59 million people). With the necessary precautions (negative test or green pass) it will soon be possible to return to travel from country to country, not only in Europe but also in the rest of the world.

Last March we considered making an online-only symposium, allowing you to follow it on your PC screen, but the dramatic improving of the situation has made it possible to meet in person in Catania in compliance with the safety conditions for both organizers and participants. This means we had to cut down on some of the activities of the original program and to change some of the locations.

We tried to keep the most significant and qualifying commitments such as the geological tour, the car drive to Mt. Etna and the visit of some cavities, but we had to give up the excursion to the Aeolian Islands and the planned speleological Camp on the volcano fields which are too risky for the impossibility of maintaining social distancing.  Those who have already paid the fee for the excursion to the Aeolian Islands will be reimbursed as soon as possible. If you decide to stay in Catania the six days when there should have been the trip to the Aeolian Islands, we will help you plan some other visits of interest to you.

Here is the new program: we hope that you do not give up on the idea of coming to Italy and share your caving experiences. We will welcome you with all the warmth and friendliness of the famous Sicilian hospitality.

See you in Catania.

The REVISED PROGRAM (as per the ISV19 Website) is:

  • CLOSING OF THE EXHIBITION: The Fingal Cave, between history and legend.
  • Evening - SYMPOSIUM CLOSING - Farewell party (GGC Terrace).

As our friends in GGC have made a huge commitment over several years to organise the Symposium, I urge you to attend if you are in a position to do so.  I acknowledge that it will be difficult, or indeed impossible, for some members to participate because of Government travel restrictions or the COVID vaccination situation in some countries, including in Australia.  For those who are not able to make it to Catania, GGC is planning an online option for some of the sessions.

US Geological Survey Karst Interest Group Workshop Goes Virtual

The US Geological Survey (USGS) Karst Interest Group (KIG) planning committee has decided to host the upcoming KIG workshop virtually on October 19-21, 2021. This decision is based on the host Universities not being unable to commit to the event based on continuing Pandemic uncertainties and because the USGS travel restrictions remain unchanged. Once the details for joining the online workshop are worked out the registered attendees will be e-mailed with the details. The first two days of technical sessions will remain unchanged except that they will be virtual. The final day, which would have been the field trip, will now be poster presentations. If you have already made hotel reservations please look into canceling them.

For more information about the workshop, visit: https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources/science/karst-interest-group-kig-2021-workshop?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects
