The International Year of Caves and Karst: Extended to 2022!

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) was created to teach people around the world about caves and karst. Organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS), we now have 183 national and international organizations partnering with us. Together we have 110 upcoming events announced around the world and 79 other events are already complete, most of which you can watch or read about at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/event-results/.

The biggest single event for the International Year is the International Congress of Speleology (https://uis2021.speleos.fr/) which has been posted to July 2022 because of the pandemic. As a result, the UIS Bureau has decided to extend the International Year through 2022. We have contacted our partners directly so they can plan events through next year. We suggest 2021 as the virtual International Year, and as conditions improve with the pandemic we hope 2022 will be the in-person International Year when we can plan and celebrate events when we are truly together.

We encourage all of you as individuals and organizations to join us in reaching out to the world about the importance of caves and karst. Remember, the International Year website (www.iyck2021.org) has a Download page with the logo, posters, a video, and other resources you are free to use. The most important at the two Planning Guides, one for virtual events and one for when we can gather physically. They will give you many ideas of things you can do to support the International Year of Caves and Karst. Remember, no event is too small. It is all important. And please post all your events and their results on the International Year website to the address near the top of the Events pages.

Join us! And visit the UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo), UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo), and/or the UIS Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/uisspeleo/).

Call for Papers: Geosciences Special Issue - Karst Unsaturated Zone

Dear Colleagues,

In celebration of the International Year of Caves and Karst 2021 (http://iyck2021.org/), we are organizing a Special Issue of Geosciences dedicated to the Karst Unsaturated Zone.

This Special Issue invites contributions dealing with, but not limited to, the following topics: epikarst and transmission zone, karst geomorphology and caves topography, karst genesis, karst inception, palaeokarst, petrophysics, flows and storage in karst unsaturated zones, karst occurrences and their impact on fluids dynamics in buried carbonate reservoirs, outcrop analogues of karstified carbonate reservoirs, and related interdisciplinary and new characterization and modelling techniques including sampling, logging, remote sensing, geophysics, groundwater monitoring.

As the guest editors, we cordially invite you to contribute (either alone or with colleagues, PhD students, post-doc, etc.) research articles, review articles, short communications, technical notes or perspectives to this Issue. Should your response be positive, we would appreciate receiving within the next weeks a short tentative abstract (150–200 words) describing the topic covered in your contribution. Papers can be submitted at any time up until the deadline as they will be published on an ongoing basis. The provisional deadline is September 30, 2021.

Please find some information about this special issue on the website: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/geosciences/special_issues/karst_unsaturated_zone .

Geosciences is an MDPI open-access journal (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/geosciences) indexed by *Scopus* (citescore 2.10) and *ESCI* (Web of Science). The Article Processing Charge (APC) is 1500 CHF (Swiss Francs) per accepted paper. There are numerous benefits to publishing in Geosciences: (1) one of the few interdisciplinary journals to cover all aspects of Earth and planetary sciences and aimed at a wide audience, (2) open access and high visibility - unlimited access, broad database coverage, and various promotional activities and academic event presentations; (3) rapid turn-around - first decision provided to authors approximately 15.5 days after submission; acceptance to publication is undertaken in 2.9 days.

For further details on the submission process, please see the instructions for authors on the journal website (http://www.mdpi.com/journal/geosciences/instructions). Please feel free to contact us or the Editorial Office ( or ), if you have any questions or concerns.

Call for Papers: Cave and Karst Session for the Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences

Dear colleague,

I hope you are doing well and safe.

I am contacting you with regard to the 4th CAJG (Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences) which we’ll organize this year and as every year in collaboration with the team of our Arabian Journal of Geosciences. We’re planning soon to enlarge this event in order to establish a bigger venue for geoscientists.

After the success of the Past Editions of CAJG with more than 1000 abstracts submitted and 400+ attendees from 50+ countries, we will continue this year by moving from Tunisia to Turkey (ITU, Istanbul), where we wish to be able to organize a physical CAJG event from 25–28 November, given the fact that the current pandemic situation will most likely improve by end of the year (finger crossed for safety and wellbeing). However, the opportunity of a virtual participation will be provided to all interested registrants at the conference.

This year on the occasion of the
International Year of Caves and Karst, the Organizing and Scientific Committees of the 4th CAJG are planning to organize a special session to host the best studies on the various geoscience topics related to Caves and Karst. An edited volume (will be published in Springer ASTI series – indexed in Scopus) and special issues are planned for preparation / publication in some Springer journals after the conference. For more details, you can read about the 4th CAJG Publication Plan.

Example of special sessions previously hosted by the CAJG:

Active Tectonics & Earthquake
Mesozoic to Recent Tectonic Agenda of the Northern African Basins
IGCP-659 ANNUAL MEETING
Petroleum Systems in North Africa

We will announce soon our
Special Session “Caves and Karst Geoscience” on the “Highlights” section of the 4th CAJG website. If you are interested in contributing to organize this session as a convener or as a keynote speaker, please send me an email in this regard.

Finally, as an international expert in this field of “Caves and Karst Geoscience”, we wish you could join us and submit a
short abstract (max. 500 words) by April 30th (extended deadline) on your newest research using this platform and by selecting Track 16 during the submission process (for more details, please read the Author Guidelines):   https://www.performer2021.cajg.org/author/login

Thank you in advance for your kind interest and cooperation. Please feel free to forward this call for abstracts to your colleagues!

Stay safe, stay healthy!

Best regards from Heidelberg,
Nabil

UIS Pseudokarst Commission: Symposium Postponed and Call for Papers for Special Newsletter

Following the postponement of the 18th International Congress of Speleology in France to the summer 2022, the Organising Committee of the 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst decided to postpone this meeting to the spring 2022. There are several reasons of this decision, such as: translation of many speleological activities to the next year, minor interest in an online meeting deprived of field sessions, and difficult pandemic situation which limits even activities necessary to hold the online meeting. Consequently, we propose to organize this Symposium next year in hybrid form in Chęciny, Poland. The next communication concerning the Pseudokarst symposium will be distributed in October 2021.

Nevertheless, the International Union of Speleology’s (UIS) Pseudokarst Commission is obligated to keep its normal activities, therefore we are ready to publish the 30th issue of the Pseudokarst Newsletter. Since this is no. 30, and the terminological problem of “pseudokarst” has been again discussed, and—furthermore—we are celebrating the International Year of Caves and Karst, we the editors want to prepare a special edition of this journal, having the motto: “Pseudokarst all over the World.” This issue will be widely distributed not only among cavers, but it should reach the general public promoting landforms and caves, which are usually considered to be far from “caves and speleology”—non-karst, probably-karst, possibly-karst, partly-karst, more-or-less-karst, karst-like caves and other landforms. This issue will contain short papers (1-3 A4 pages), describing in clear, commonly understood language (obviously English) pseudokarst phenomena from various regions and continents, richly illustrated. Consequently, everyone and especially members of the Commission who provided photos for IYCK, are warmly invited to submit such manuscripts. The suggested deadline for manuscript submission is May 2021, but all authors planning to submit such materials are gently asked to submit applications with provisional titles and proposing the topics they will discuss to: or .

We hope to have a very interesting and picturesque publication, which will raise awareness of pseudokarst in the wider public.
