The International Year of Caves and Karst: How to Participate
The International Union of Speleology (UIS) welcomes everyone to the International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK)! The major goal of the IYCK is to teach people about caves and karst. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to become part of the IYCK. No program or activity is too small. We are trying to reach the world and need your help. Please visit the IYCK website’s (www.iyck2021.org) and its Download page for the Planning Guide and other materials you are free to use, If you have already planned events, please send them for posting on the Events page. We also welcome several new partners (almost 100 in total!) and expect to welcome more soon.
The official opening of the IYCK will be on 26 January 2021. The location, details, and other information will be posted soon on the IYCK website (www.iyck2021.org), UIS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uisspeleo) and the new UIS Twitter account (https://twitter.com/uisspeleo). Please visit those sites to see how you can help by being part of this global education campaign and contact me if you have any questions ().

International Year Events
Following are two new events of the International Year of Caves and Karst. The full list is at http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. Please visit this site and add your International Year events to the growing list.
-----------------------
Join the International Year Hypogenic Caves Project
Many events are being planned for the International Year of Caves and Karst. They are posted on the IYCK Events page, http://iyck2021.org/index.php/events/. One event that will last all year is the Hypogenic Caves Project (http://www.hypogenic-caves.com/).
Hypogenic caves are more common than believed. Most of the time they tend to go unnoticed or unrecognized for their morphological characteristics. Until recently, it was estimated that only 10% of the world’s caves were hypogenic. Current studies show that this figure is much higher than estimated. Hypogenic caves have common patterns, and knowledge and identification of them will help in their study and protection.
The goal of the project is to use photos to help identify these cavities and their characteristics. The project is open to any caver, photographer or hobbyist from any country. During the 52 weeks of 2021, the International Year of Caves and Karst, one of more photos of a cave will be published on the website, with information describing their morphologies, speleothems, or other relationships with the hypogenic caves. The information and photos will also be posted on social media networks: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Join us! Send photos and information on hypogenic caves in your area!

Explorers Club Presentation: Underwater Ice Age Discoveries Beneath Yucatan
Join our host, celebrated cave diver Jill Heinerth, for a fascinating evening learning about underwater caves and prehistoric mining activity of ocher deposits in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Researchers studying the subterranean site La Mina will share their findings on the region’s prehistory, the exploration the discovery and documentation of the site, and the use of the mineral pigment ocher in Pleistocene-Holocene communities.
Since the mid 1990’s over 10 sets of Paleoamerican human remains have been found in the flooded caves inland of Mexico’s Caribbean coastline. Research into these remains has revealed that they are among the earliest human inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere. What had remained a mystery until 2017 was why the earliest Americans would have risked the perilous journey into a dark, disorienting, and hazardous cave environment that would have been dry during the last ice age. In 2017 the discovery of La Mina revealed one reason: early Americans were mining for ocher. Since then, extensive research and documentation has been carried out by a team of experts to determine the significance of the site.
Cave diver and Explorers Club Fellow Jill Heinerth will discuss these compelling discoveries with several La Mina project researchers, including three Club Fellows and representatives from Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, the University of California San Diego’s Cultural Heritage Engineering Initiative, the University of Missouri, McMaster University and CINDAQ (The Quintana Roo Aquifer Research Center).
Streaming live - Monday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. USA Eastern (New York) Time - on explorers.org, our YouTube channel, and our Facebook Live!

2021 Call for the EuroSpeleo Protection Label
Dear caving friends,
The European Speleological Federation (FSE) and its European Cave Protection Commission (ECPC) are very pleased to announce the launching of the 2021 Call for the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. Please find the guidelines and application form (deadline for applications 30 June 2021) on the FSE website: http://www.eurospeleo.eu/en/commissions-en/cave-protection/ecpc-activities/eurospeleo-protection-label.html
The aim of the EuroSpeleo Protection Label is to support active cave protection in the speleo clubs, committees, national commissions, etc., all over Europe and to share this knowledge throughout Europe.
For this reason, many cavers and speleological structures are identifying specific solutions which can then be shared with the whole European speleological community, in order to adapt these cave protection solutions for application in other European countries.
The FSE / ECPC would like to recognize quality projects which can help to find better solutions for cave protection among the speleological community by awarding them the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. This award should also involve financial support to allow continuation of the important work that has been carried out by the awarded clubs, committees and commissions, because we all need to preserve the speleological heritage for the next generations.
Please consult the document on the website for all further information and technical rules.
Best regards,
Jean-Claude Thies

European Geophysical Union Session: Groundwater Ages and Mean Residence Times
Dear Colleagues,
We use groundwater age distributions to understand the flow and storage characteristics of aquifers including impacts of subsurface heterogeneity, surface-groundwater interactions, groundwater recharge dynamics and many other processes.
As in previous years, this session aims to bring together experience from various fields using a wide range of different techniques (tracer techniques, modelling, etc.) to estimate groundwater ages.
We are also happy that Professor Grant Ferguson (University of Saskatchewan) agreed to give a invited presentation on his recent commentary “Rethinking groundwater age” (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-020-0629-7) and we are looking forward to a vivid discussion.
Please find at https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/session/39488 the more detailed session description (submission deadline: January 12th 2021).
Looking forward to see you in the Vienna virtual space,
Andreas Hartmann (Universities of Freiburg/Bristol)
Giorgia Lucianetti (Roma Tre University)
Martin Kralik (University of Vienna)
Uwe Morgenstern (GNS Sciences, Hydrogeology)

European Geophysical Union Session: Approaches to Natural Processes and Engineering Problems in Karst Environments
The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 13 January 2021, 13:00 Central European (Parsi) Time:
https://egu21.eu/abstracts_and_programme/how_to_submit_an_abstract.html
Session ID#: HS8.2.8 (https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/session/39492)
Session Description:
Karst environments are characterized by distinctive landforms and unique hydrological behaviors. Karst systems are commonly extremely complex, heterogeneous and very difficult to manage, because their formation and evolution are controlled by a wide range of geological, hydrological, geochemical and biological processes. Furthermore, karst systems are extremely vulnerable due to the direct connection between the surface and subsurface through the complex networks of conduits and caves.
The great variability and unique connectivity may result in serious engineering problems: on one hand, karst groundwater resources are easily contaminated by pollution because of the rapidity of conduit flow; on the other hand, the presence of karst conduits that weakens the strength of the rock mass may lead to serious natural and human-induced hazards. The design and development of engineering projects in karst environments thus should necessarily require: 1) an enhanced understanding of the natural processes governing the initiation and evolution of karst systems through both field and modelling approaches, and 2) specific interdisciplinary approaches aimed at mitigating the detrimental effects of hazardous processes and environmental problems.
This session calls for abstracts on research related to geomorphology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, hazard mitigation in karst environments in the context of climate change and increasing human disturbance.
