TAMU-CC Study Abroad Programs: Karst of the Yucatán Peninsula

This GEOL 4650 Field Geology course at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi describes the different types of caves and karst rocks, the water rock interactions in carbonate rock systems, and it explains cave formation via hydrogeological and geochemical processes. It offers field work experience such as sample collection, determining field parameters, karst and cave surveys, measuring spring discharges in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and laboratory experience on the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi campus. The relationship between the Ring of Cenotes and regional fracture patterns will also be determined in the field. The course will be offered during the second Summer 2021 session

Prerequisites: GEOL 1403 Physical Geology, GEOL 4444 Hydrogeology or GEOL 4311/ESCI4490.011 Paleoclimatology or permission of instructor(s).

For more information visit Karst of the Yucatan Peninsula Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (tamucc.edu) or contact: Dr. Val Murgulet, , (361)825-6023

Cave and Karst Graduate Studies Programs

This spreadsheet, available on the Karst Waters Institute (KWI) website, is a crowdsourced list of graduate programs in the United States. For students thinking about beginning graduate studies in karst, or for professors offering cave and karst research opportunities, this is a great way to make connections! (The list is not ranked by KWI, nor does KWI endorse any particular graduate program listed here. It is provided only as a frequently updated resource for potential students who are interested in karst graduate programs. If you would like your program to be included on the list, please email Rachel Bosch at karstgeomorph [at] gmail.com.)

Visual KARSYS: Next Online Course Announcement

The next Visual KARSYS course will occur online on 3-4 February 2021 in two 3-hour sessions. The course is designed for geologists and hydrogeologists (engineers, academic, students) working in karst environments for applied issues (groundwater resources, natural hazards, geothermy, construction, etc.). It intends to provide steps and tools to attendees who will apply KARSYS by themselves. For more information visit https://www.visualkarsys.com/.

14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst: Call for Papers

Dear Potential participants of the 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst,

Recent news, which are a little bit more optimistic than before, allow us to hope that the 14th International Symposium on Pseudokarst will be held in Chęciny, Poland, 22-25th April 2021, as it was announced in the Symposium homepage https://14pseudokarst.wonders4you.com/. The scientific sessions of this Symposium will surely be performed in that term, in the traditional form (in the European Centre of Geological Education, Chęciny, Poland - https://www.eceg.uw.edu.pl/en/ ) or via Internet, whereas the field sessions will be held in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, if it is legally allowed in that term (if not, a postponing of the field sessions is also possible). The general program of the conference and estimated costs will be similar to those presented before; see again the Symposium homepage https://14pseudokarst.wonders4you.com/.

Consequently, all are again invited to participate in this Symposium. Participants who have been already registered, are gently asked to confirm they interest in the Symposium via e-mail (to the Symposium e-mail address). New potential participants should submit the fulfilled registration form by the 15th of January 2021 (to the Symposium e-mail address).

Symposium materials: papers (up to 8 pages, submitted up to the 31st January 2021) and field session guidebook, will be published in the Pseudokarst Newsletter no. 30. However, other papers concerning the recent activities, explorations and studies on pseudokarst, as well as announcements (also obituaries) submitted up to the 31st January 2021, will be welcome. Therefore, the Symposium participants that will have presentations or posters and want to publish them, are asked to submit them as a WORD file (text) and separate JPG files (figures) to the Symposium e-mail address directly or (if the total charge is larger than 10 MB) via WeTransfer up to the 31st January 2020.

Sincerely Yours

Jan Urban, President of the UIS Pseudokarst Commission.
