Karst Waters Institute Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science

Administered by the Karst Waters Institute
www.karstwaters.org

The William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science was established in 2002 to recognize the significant contributions of the late William (Bill) L. Wilson.  Bill used a variety of techniques, and unusual creativity, to tackle some of the most difficult karst science questions in Florida and elsewhere.  He developed a leading karst consulting company in the United States, Subsurface Evaluations, Inc.  To stimulate the development of new, energetic, motivated, and creative karst scientists, and to remember Bill Wilson and his dedication to karst science, the scholarship has been established in his memory.  The initial donation of funds to establish the scholarship were made by Diane C. Wilson, and, upon her passing, the name of the scholarship was changed to include recognition of her commitment to supporting karst science.  The scholarship includes recognition at the KWI spring banquet, a plaque naming the awardee, and a one-time award of $1,000.

To apply for the William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship, the following conditions exist:
* The applicant must be currently enrolled in, or have been accepted into, a master’s degree program at an institution of higher education in the United States.  PhD students are not eligible.
* A written proposal of the planned karst study.  The research topic should focus on karst science, broadly defined, including subfields of geochemistry, geology, geophysics, or hydrology.  The proposal narrative is limited to 1000 words , not including figure captions or references.
* A half-page budget explanation.  Although funds are unrestricted and do not have to provide complete support of the project, a simple budget and short justification should be included to reflect how the award may further the proposed work.
* One-page CV.  The student should prepare a one-page CV that includes information on academic background and any relevant employment or research experience.  Include a list of course completed in graduate school.
* One letter of recommendation from the student’s advisor or mentor.  These letters should be emailed directly to by the letter writer.  The letter should include a statement confirming that the student is in progress toward a master's degree.
* Applications are due by February 15, 2021.  They should be submitted electronically as a single pdf file that includes the proposal, budget, and CV:
Dr. Janet S. Herman
Professor, Environmental Sciences, University of Virginia

Questions regarding the scholarship should be addressed to Dr. Herman.

Applicants will be notified in late March of the decision of the Scholarship Committee.

Publications and presentations derived from supported research should acknowledge the Karst Waters Institute and the William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship.

I’m Brad Wuest, President/CEO and co-owner of our family business, Natural Bridge Caverns , which is located near San Antonio, Texas, USA.

I also have the pleasure of serving as President of the International Show Caves Association (ISCA) which was founded in 1990 and is headquartered in Genga , Italy, home of Frasassi Cave s . ISCA is an organization of people, associations, corporations, and government agencies who own, manage, or operate show caves that are open to the public. ISCA provides a forum for networking and collaboration. ISCA aims to promote, encourage, and support the cooperation of show cave operators, speleologists and cave enthusiasts through collaboration and the sharing of information. ISCA also promotes the preservation and conservation of caves, while increasing public interest in the caves by way of marketing, public relations, and the evolution of methods to enhance the show cave experience.

ISCA has a new newsletter that we are happy to share with all of you! You can find it on our website here: ISCA Newsletter November – December 2020 .

I hope you find it interesting and informative. We will be happy to share future newsletters too.  If you would like to know more about ISCA or if there is anything the association or I can do to help you, please let me know!

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park Celebration: Philippines

Puerto Princesa Underground River Park is a World Heritage Site located within the Palawan Biosphere Reserve in the Philippines. During the week of 3-11 November, the park hosted the Subaraw Biodiversity Festival in virtual format ( https://www.facebook.com/ppundergroundriver , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIh14xDLVRk&feature=youtu.be ).  This festival commemorates the 2011 designation of the park as one of the seven wonders of nature. Although the week has passed, you are encouraged to celebrate with them, learn more about this incredible cave, and share comments on the Facebook page.

New Book Available: Cave and Karst of the Upper Midwest, USA

A new book in the Springer karst series, CAVES AND KARST OF THE UPPER MIDWEST, USA, discusses the karst and pseudokarst of the Upper Midwest, USA, consisting of the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois—the first regional synthesis in 40 years. Starting with an overview of the regional geology of what is largely glaciated fluviokarst and paleokarst developed on Paleozoic carbonates, but including other lithologies such as the St. Peter Sandstone and the Ft. Dodge Gypsum, the caves, springs, sinkholes, and karst hydrogeology of each state is described. Special attention is devoted to the region’s longest caves: Coldwater Cave, Mystery Cave, and the Minnesota Cave Preserve caves. Application of tools such as data loggers and LiDAR, with new conceptual models such as hypogenic speleogenesis, have been transformative here. Special topics include lead and zinc mining in the Driftless Area, vertebrate and invertebrate cave fauna near the Laurentide ice limit, the impact and policies of nutrient and herbicide intensive modern agriculture on karst, and paleoclimate studies. The discovery, exploration, institutional history of caving organizations, and show caves of the Upper Midwest, from the year 1700 onwards, are brought up to date. The top 10 historical paradigms of cave and karst science in the Midwest are reviewed. Perspectives on paleontology, archeology, and Native American rock art are included.

Announcement: Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists Karst Hazards Forum

The Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists (AEG) is planning a Karst Hazards Forum (KHF) as a virtual meeting and an International Year of Caves and Karst event.  The KHF will address the three broad topics of Karst, Pseudokarst, and Anthropogenic Sinkholes [karst-like erosion due to human activities].  The KHF’s goal is to bring together specialists, who will explain these features and formative processes, their professional investigations and measures to avoid or mitigate karst hazards, and provide case histories of these hazards. The forum will describe how karst impacts existing infrastructure, could potentially affect new construction, and may be avoided by land-use planning. The most important element of the forum is of the emphasis on promoting public safety. These goals will be achieved by educating both practitioners and policy makers, who in turn affect public policy, in:
* recent advancements in karst hazards’ investigations and mitigation measures;
* the information provided to the public on the risk of these hazards; and
* the consideration of state legislation and/or private insurance.
The forum will include presentations and posters that on how these hazards may be investigated, mapped, avoided, and mitigated, or have other risk reduction measures for varying infrastructure concerns (e.g., dams, power plants, tunneling, large structures, roadways, residential construction, etc.).

Forum participants will be able to view the KHF live and ask questions and/or, with their registered status, view presentations, posters, and their discussion in the subsequent two weeks.   The virtual KHF is planned to be offered over two successive weeks of Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday afternoons starting on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.  The number of days and sessions will depend on the final number of accepted presentations and posters.

The three main topics will be divided into sessions, as appropriate.  Some of the anticipated sessions may be: investigation/mapping, geologic environs, geophysics/remote sensing, hazard/use categories (surface material loss, groundwater contamination, groundwater supply, construction impacts), risk of the hazard, mitigation of the hazard, public information/protection, and case histories/virtual field trips.

The KHF’s website is www.aegmeetings.org .  The website will be updated regularly with information.
