Announcing: TransKarst 2019: The 3 rd Asian Trans-Disciplinary Karst
Conference

The Philippine Speleological Society is hosting TransKarst 2019—the 3 rd Asian
Trans-Disciplinary Karst Conference on 7-10 September 2019 in Bohol,
Philippines.
The conference is organized in conjunction with the Asian Union of
Speleology. In addition to the usual papers and event, the meeting will host
the annual meeting of the Bureau of the International Union of Speleology
(UIS) whose members will teach multiple
instructional workshops. The website has just been posted,
http://www.transkarst2019.com/ , and more information will be added soon.

New Book: Engineering Karstology of Dams and Reservoirs

The latest book by Dr. Petar Milanović is published by CRC Press, Taylor &
Francis Group
 (
https://www.crcpress.com/Engineering-Karstology-of-Dams-and-Reservoirs/Milanovic/p/book/9781498748070
). It contains vast practical
engineering experience acquired by Prof. Milanović during his many years of
dealing with dams and reservoirs in a complex environment such as karst. A
wealth of data is presented in 13 chapters and on 356 pages, including
recommendations for site selection,
research methods, various technical solutions for remedying or preventing
water losses, as well as lessons learned from dam projects executed in karst
throughout the world.

-----------------------

New Book: Karst of Ireland - Landscape Hydrogeology Methods

The book by Dr. David Drew was published by the Geological Survey of Ireland (
https://gsi.ie/gsishop/Product.aspx?Productid=1513&Catid=20 ).
It was announced as a practical book for both specialists and
non-specialists. It is 318 pages long, and all the chapters contain excellent
photos and illustrations. Such an exceptional visualisation of karstified
areas is especially useful for decision makers
and may facilitate effective environmental management.

Challenges for Subterranean Landscape Conservation in the World's Karst
Regions: Call for Abstracts

There will be a symposium "Challenges for Subterranean Landscape Conservation
in the World's Karst Regions" at the 10th World Congress of the International
Association of Landscape Ecologists in Milan, Italy, July 1-5, 2019 organized
by Claudia Canedoli and Emilio Padoa-Schioppa of the University of
Milano-Bicocca and Chris Groves of Western Kentucky University. Please feel
free to forward this notice to any
interested colleagues, and Dr. Canedoli can be reached with questions at <
 >. Please note that the abstract deadline is 25
January 2019 at 23:59:59 Central European Time.

Thanks very much to Claudia for instigating this idea and introducing these
ideas to a potentially broad new group of scientists and conservationists. The
context of landscape ecology is very useful here because it can help us
generate a conversation about differences between, for example, the approaches
of  cave  protection vs.  karst landscape  or  karst system  protection.

For information on the Congress, visit http://www.iale2019.unimib.it .

The session description is as follows:

Landscape ecology has contributed to important advances in environmental
conservation because it helps expand attention from single sites to larger
scale
patterns and processes and to understand complex interactions existing among
a mosaic of elements. This has enhanced understanding of the complexity of
natural systems and informed land management strategies.

Karst environments have peculiar hydrogeological and ecological features, and
are among the most fragile ecosystems in the world. They furnish valuable
natural resources, such as water, and represent suitable habitat for the
survival of many rare or endemic
species. Despite this, the importance of these ecosystems has so far been
largely ignored, leading in many cases to overexploitation of subterranean
resources, degradation of the environment (both at the surface and
underground), as well as habitat and biodiversity
loss. Moreover, subterranean ecosystems are in many cases still poorly mapped
because of limitations in exploration and therefore subterranean spatial
patterns are typically less well known.

While terrestrial systems are normally represented as surficial environmental
units, in the presence of karstic phenomena it is important to consider also
the close relationship that exists between the surface and underground
landscape systems. This has repercussions
also in conservation strategies for these areas, where it is common to
consider strategies for the conservation of single caves (e.g. the European
Habitat Directive for the conservation of habitats defines a cave as ‘a
punctual element’) or of single endemic
species or taxonomic groups that are easily detectable in the surface.
However, it is increasingly recognized that many conservation and land-use
issues can only be tackled in a sensible way by considering broader landscape
frameworks within which caves are
important elements. Our understanding of karst systems as a whole suffers
from of lack of large-scale, comprehensive studies that consider the
subterranean ecosystem as a (three-dimensional) landscape. By changing this
perspective and acknowledging the complexity
of these environments, we will be able to integrate ecological processes,
biodiversity patterns, energy flows, hydrological properties, and
geomorphological features. In order to develop our research, it is necessary
to move towards highly multidisciplinary
studies that are able to link subterranean elements and features and
understand the ecological processes of the ecosystem as a whole.

Because human activities strongly modify existing landscape patterns and
processes, either deliberately or inadvertently, the understanding of their
impacts on karst systems is essential for rational land use planning,
management and biodiversity and resource
 conservation.

In this symposium, we are seeking original studies, conceptual works,
case-studies and presentation of past, ongoing and future research project
dealing with the subterranean environment. Contributions are encouraged from
every field that can contributes to
advances in understanding about these peculiar ecosystems: geology,
hydrology, soil science, biology, taxonomy, zoology, ethology, ecotoxicology
and others. We are particularly interested in studies leading to better
understanding of the composition, structure
 and function of subterranean landscapes; energy and material flows;
functional links between patterns and processes; relationships between
aboveground and belowground environments; subterranean biodiversity
conservation; human impacts; valuation of services
 provided by subterranean ecosystems.

The intention of the symposium a stimulate interactions between researchers
involved in the study of these complex and intriguing systems and to promote a
debate about the necessity to shift attention towards a large-scale
perspective that integrates both biotic
and abiotic features to understand their spatial patterns and functional
links with the final aim to enhance conservation strategies.

Cave Internships Available: Montana, USA

I am the Program Manager for a Conservation Intern program in Montana. We will
have two internships available this summer through the US Forest Service
(USFS)/Bureau
of Land Management (BLM) that will be focused on cave inventory in the Pryor
Mountains. We are looking for applicants with caving experience. I have listed
more about the opportunity below:

The BLM Billings Field Office and US Forest Service Custer Gallatin National
Forest are working in conjunction with the National Speleological Society’s
Northern
Rocky Mountain Grotto to conduct cave inventory and monitoring of cave
resources. Cave entrance location from a November 2017 recon flight and other
information sources will be used to identify potential caves for inventory,
monitoring and significance evaluation.

* navigate to the points collected during the helicopter flight use GPS
* investigate to see if the location is a cave entrance, document what they
find using a standardized inventory protocol and digital
 photos
* locate and enter cave systems to document and monitor physical cave
characteristics, including biologic, geologic, hydrologic, and
 cultural resource
* incorporate findings into work on USFS and BLM Cave Management Plans and
Federal Cave Resources Protection Act significant cave designations
* additional time will be spent organizing and compiling data, including
digital photos, populating inventory databases and/or hard
 copy files.

Do you have a way to spread the word about the amazing opportunity? Anyone
interested should apply here:
