Geological Society of America: Session Proposals due 1 February!

Dear Karst Division Members

It's that time of year to submit proposals for Karst sessions for the 2018 GSA Meeting!  The meeting will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on 4-7 November and
 session proposals can submitted here .

The deadline for submitting topical sessions is February 1st, 2018  and the abstract submission window will open on April 1st, 2018. Short course proposals are also due on 2/1.

Please remember that the Karst Division Management Board has adjusted the way that abstracts and sessions are now managed at the annual meeting. Special Topical
 Sessions can still be proposed as before, but, moving forward, researchers will also have the option of submitting their abstracts to one of six predefined topical categories:
* Karst Hydrology and Geology
* Karst Processes and Speleology
* Karst Hazards and Monitoring
* Karst Sedimentary, Paleoclimate, and Historical Records
* Karst Ecosystems and Biogeochemistry
* Pseudo-karst Processes and Features

There will also be a Karst Division general discipline section that you can submit to if you are undecided and your abstract will be placed in the most appropriate session from those available. Please see the attached file for additional details.

In addition, the Karst Division Awards Deadline is also coming up on February 1st, 2018 . Please find more info on the awards here  (or see attached document) and use these links to  submit
 your nominations or apply for
 an award  (or you can use the attached forms).

Please let us know if you have any questions and we look forward to serving you and the Division in the coming year!

Thank you and best wishes,

GSA Karst Division Management Board

New Cave Biology Book Seeking Authors

Happy New Year! I’m seeking contributing authors for an upcoming cave biology book. I’m the editor of the tentatively
 titled “Cave Life - Drivers of Diversity and Diversification”. The book aims to examine terrestrial and aquatic systems globally and auger into structural and climatic variables driving how life assembles and evolves underground. All cavernicolous taxonomic
 groups and ecological communities will be considered. This project is on contract and will be published sometime in 2019. If you would like to contribute a chapter, please contact me for details. Also, if you’d be so kind as to forward this email to anyone
 you think may be interested, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thanks very much in advance!

International Vulcanospeleology Symposium: Registration Open

Hello Interested Vulcanospeleologists!

It’s time now to start thinking about registering for the 18th International Vulcanospeleology Symposium to be held this July in Lava Beds National
 Monument in northern California. We have limited the symposium to 80 participants, so please be sure and book it soon.

The IVS website and Regonline website are now open.  You will use the IVS website ( www.18ivslavabeds.com )
 to book your accommodations if you plan to stay at the the Winema Lodge. You can pick from dorm rooms, hotel rooms or mobile home unit rooms. This is where the symposium (and most meals) will be held and is the most convenient place to stay.

You will use the Regonline to book your registration, your meal plan and your pre and post trips.

For those who wish to book the Wild Goose Lodge Hotel (15 minute drive away), note that rooms have been reserved for our group (please mention
 the IVS when booking for a discount).  Note that you will be paying them direct.

Quick Facts:
·         Date is  Sat, July 21-Thurs, July 26, 2018   This gives folks enough time to drive to Helena, Montana for
 the National Speleological Society (NSS) Convention
·         Registration is $200 and the meal plan is $200.
·         Accommodations run from $25 per night for a Winema Lodge dorm room, to $85 per night for a Winema Lodge hotel room. (Wild Goose is $60
 per night).
·         Each day will consist of seminar presentations in the morning and fun activities in the afternoon (caving, canoeing, hiking, BBQ and
 star party)

We'd love to have as many papers and presentations as possible.  Please send your abstracts to Carolyn Parcheta at  . Please
 ensure you put IVS18 in the title of the email.  Kindly indicate how much time you would like and if your format is anything different than a power point type show.

We are starting to organize the afternoon trips and we'll get them on the website as soon as possible. We are working with the park service to
 gain entry to special caves such as Crystal Cave and Fern Cave. Stay tuned  and cross your fingers!

Don't forget to look at the pre and post trips. We will be adding more as we get organized.

We have some folks coming that will be continuing onto the National Convention in Helena, Montana.  If you want a ride or can host a ride, please
 let us know and we will try and connect you together.  So far we have George Veni wanting a ride.......his email is  .  He is also willing to host a ride if others want to hitch with him.

Again, we hope you can join us for a great symposium this summer in northern California.  It will be fun and educational.
