This edition from the European Speleological Federation is available online on : http://fsue.ffspeleo.fr/forums/viewtopic.php?id=213
Dear Caving Friends / Chers Amis Speleo,
Before speaking about the most important news just after, it's a pleasure to come back to you, a little late, but with a lot of news with this new issue of the FSUE'mail. The first snows have arrived early november falling on the 1st Edition of the Alpine Underground in Germany. Here comes the time to start our period of Winter caving.
FSUE OPENS TO EUROPE :
The most important news is of course the opening of the European Federation to All European countries, weither they are member or not of the EU. This idea on which we have worked since 1999 has finally become a reality on last August during the FSUE General Assembly Meeting (GAM). This means that the FSUE become a real European Federation, and over the 27 countries of the EU (actually 22 comprise a speleological organisation) comes about 15 new European countries that have a speleological organisation who are most welcome to join the FSUE. These European countries have their data included on the following page :
http://fsue.org/main1/3_members.html
Any European country who wish to become a new member of the FSUE can send a request of membership to the Bureau. The membership is completed after filling the data information sheet about the national organisation and paying the annual fee. For any further information please send a message to :
Once again, a warm Welcome to all European non-EU countries inside the big European Speleological Family !
FSUE GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING :
Over the opening of the FSUE to European non-EU countries, some other important decisions have been taken during the last GAM in Visby-Sweden. First of all we would like to deeply thank the Swedish Society for the organisation of the 2nd EuroSpeleo Forum at the Baltic Speleological Congress that have hosted the GAM and gathered cavers from 15 European countries. This meeting have seen some important decisions taken that are here summurized. The full report will be broacasted within few weeks.
- The new official headquarters of the FSUE are now in Luxembourg,
- The FSUE has officially adopted the UIS Code of Ethics and encourage every European countries to do so,
- The vice-president and treasurer have been re-conducted for a new mandate,
- An extraordinary GAM will be organised during next European Congress in Vercors to deal with 2 pending issues :
1- Proportionnal membership fee & 1-5 voices system
2- FEALC-FSUE agreement
CONGRESSES IN EUROPE :
The FSUE Bureau would like to warmly thank for their invitation the federations organisers of the following congresses where the FSUE have been present to have a free stand and to organise a "European Speleo Meeting" since our issue N°11 : the Swiss congress by the SSS/SGH, the British Hidden Earth by the BCA, the Italian congress by the SSI, the 1st Alpine Underground symposium in Germany by the VdHK, and the Belgian JSS2007 by the UBS. Due to an heavy automn calendar the FSUE unfortunately could not be fully present to 2 other national events where the Bureau would have liked to go : the Roumanian congress by the FRS and the Spanish Subterranea - 25th birthday of the FEE. The FSUE wants to send them its best thanks for the invitation and congratulations for the good work that we could follow and that we morally support. Thanks to all for your great contribution to the building of the European Speleology.
EUROSPELEO PROTECTION :
During the Public meeting before last GAM the Protection Commission has been activated with a group of cavers from different countries who wanted to start the work. Since then a lot of job has been done, a group of about 30 cavers from more than 14 countries has been formed, a working agenda has been established and the group has met during last Alpine Underground in Germany. Here the composition of the new board head :
- Head of the Commission : Christiane Grebe (DE)
- Secretary : Viviana Lugo (FR)
- Secretary : Ioana Meleg (RO)

IN LIVE WITH BRUSSELS :
Many things have happen since this summer in relation with the European Commission. First the European Congress Vercors 2008 is progressing on its financial requests on 2 programs (Youth programs and Citizens programs). The work is quite huge to build the administrative request files, but it's really worse to do it. We'll keep you informed of the results of our requests.
Then, Christiane Grege has represented the FSUE during a lobbying visit organised by some German politics. Her exchanges with the EU Commission about underground environment protection was very fruitful. The European Speleological Community has been invited to a meeting end of January with some Basque eurodeputies about the protection of some specific local caves. For more information about this issue please contact :
CALLS FOR ...:

DID YOU KNOW ?
The non-EU European countries represent a total speleological population of about 10.000 cavers. In total European countries comprise about 50.000 cavers who are members of a national organisation. If to this number we add the cavers who are not officially member of a caving club, the European caving population probably reaches about 100.000 citizens in Europe. This, without speaking about the estimated 150.000 persons that are every year initiated by caving clubs during an underground visit ...
