World Karst Aquifer Map Available Online

One and a half years ago, the first World Karst Aquifer Map (WOKAM) was
printed. The project was led by Dr. Nico Goldscheider of the Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology
in Germany and included an international team of experts, including from
NCKRI. Now the WOKAM GIS files are available online and can be cited and
downloaded from http://doi.org/10.25928/b2.21_sfkq-r406 .

One major scientific paper describing the mapping process has been published
by the WOKAM team (
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10040-016-1519-3 ),
plus some minor papers, and a second major paper is in preparation on the
mapping results.

Call for Karst Abstracts: Society of Exploration Geophysicists, San Antonio,
Texas, USA

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to invite you to submit an abstract to this year's SEG annual
meeting in San Antonio, Texas, USA (September 15-20, 2019). Alf Hawkins, and
I, Mustafa
Saribudak, are organizing a technical special session on the Applications of
Surface, Airborne, and Drone Karst Geophysics and we feel your contributions
would provide a prominent contribution to the session. Please, let us know, if
you will plan to submit
 an abstract.

Karst Geophysics Session Description: Geophysical methods are becoming
increasingly common for investigations of karst. Techniques such as
electromagnetics, electrical
resistivity (2D, 3D), self-potential, microgravity, ground penetrating radar,
refraction tomography, and induced polarization have greatly expanded our
capability to image and characterize surface and subsurface karst phenomena.
In addition, the introduction
of unmanned aerial vehicles (UA Vs) or drones will have provided another
technological break-through in karst geophysical surveying. However, many
karst scientists who use more traditional methodologies are unfamiliar with,
unaware of, or do not have ready
access to these tools. As urban populations expand into areas where karst
geohazards and karstic aquifers are present, non-invasive geophysical
techniques have become increasingly important. The geophysical information can
be used to locate caves and sinkholes
in the subsurface, quantify hazard estimates for structures being planned
over karstic landscapes, explore groundwater resources, and characterize
geologic structure. Thus geophysical data can greatly reduce hydrogeological
knowledge gaps and can improve our
 understanding of karst flow systems.

We hope you can submit an abstract for this session between 1 February and 1
April 2019. Please feel free to contact us at . We look forward
to seeing you in September at San Antonio. The conference website is:
https://seg.org/Annual-Meeting-2019 .

Best Regards,
Mustafa Saribudak

EuroSpeleo Protection Label: Application 2019 Call-out

Dear caving friends,
 (VERSION FRANCAISE CI-DESSOUS)

The European Speleological Federation (FSE) and its European Cave Protection
Commission (ECPC) is very pleased to announce the launching of the 2019 Call
for the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. Please find enclosed the application form
(deadline for applications
30 June 2019). You can also find the application form on the FSE website:
http://www.eurospeleo.eu/en/commissions-en/cave-protection/ecpc-activities/eurospeleo-protection-label.html

Application form in Word:
http://www.eurospeleo.eu/images/stories/docs/ECPC/ESPL_Application-2019.docx
 Application form as Pdf:
http://www.eurospeleo.eu/images/stories/docs/ECPC/ESPL_Application-2019.pdf

The aim of the EuroSpeleo Protection Label is to support active cave
protection in the speleo clubs, committees, national commissions, etc, all
over Europe and to share this knowledge throughout Europe.

For this reason many cavers and speleological structures are identifying
specific solutions which can then be shared with the whole European
speleological community, in order to adapt these cave protection solutions for
application in other European countries.

The FSE / ECPC would like to recognize quality projects which can help to find
better solutions for cave protection among the speleological community by
awarding them the EuroSpeleo Protection Label. This award should also involve
financial support to allow
continuation of the important work that has been carried out by the awarded
clubs, committees and commissions, because we all need to preserve the
speleological heritage for the next generations.

Please consult the annexed document for all further information and technical
rules.

Best regards,

Jean-Claude Thies
