16 th Sinkhole Conference: Save the Date!

The 16 th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts on Karst, more commonly called “The Sinkhole Conference,”
will be held on 20-24 April 2020 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This long-standing internationally acclaimed and attended meeting is multidisciplinary, with topics including geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, land management, water supply and quality, geophysics,
and many others. The fabulous location, facilities, and proposed field trip sites already have people saying that this will be the best Sinkhole Conference yet!

Mark your calendar for April 2020 and look for registration and the call for abstracts to begin in Spring 2019. We are just starting to add information to our website, http://www.sinkholeconference.com/ , so bookmark it to check as more details are added.

New Digital Book: The Caves of Sancti Spiritus, Matanzas and Pinar del Rio, Cuba

Announcing a new digital book on the caves of Cuba. The Caves of Sancti Spiritus, Matanzas and Pinar del Rio, Cuba includes 11 biology papers that discuss cave invertebrate
inventories, bat population dynamics, comparative analysis of captured bats, bat monitoring, expedition reports and a special focus on the piscivorous bat, Noctilo leporinus . Also completed are papers on the surface flora and fauna of the caving areas. Seven physical science papers on cave paleontology, mineralogy, geomorphology and geography area also included in the 366 page book. The Caves of Sancti
Spiritus, Matanzas and Pinar del Rio was prepared from work undertaken by joint Cuban and American teams over 18 years. Biology authors are largely Cuban and geology authors are largely from the US. All told more than 20 authors and 50 researchers contributed
to the content. The book was compiled and edited by Joel Despain.

The book includes nearly 200 large format photos of some of the most crystalline caves on Earth by award-winning US cave photographers such as Kevin Downey and Dave
Bunnell. A final section includes large format maps several of which have won awards at the NSS Salons.

The book highlights caves in Sancti Spiritus Province but also includes caves and cave research in Matanzas and Pinar del Rio provinces. It is partially bilingual with
articles in English and Spanish or translated into both. Trips to Cuba were undertaken legally with permits from the US Office of Foreign Assets Control and the Cuban Government through the work of Cyndie Walck and Alejandro Emperador.

An earlier version of this book was released late in 2017 and reviewed in the NSS News. This newer version has been updated with new papers, photos and maps. The digital
pdf book is available for download at www.calizamedia.net for US $15. The web page includes previews of the book and a photo gallery. We hope
for a printed version in the future.

46 th International Association of Hydrogeologists Congress: Malaga, Spain

The 46 th IAH Congress “Groundwater Management and Governance Coping with Water Scarcity” will take place in Malaga, Spain, between 23 and 27
September, 2019. Bartolome Andreo ensured Karst Hydrogeology as one of the session topics (no. 7) with is preliminarily announced at http://www.iah2019.org/topics-and-sessions/ , which contains the following description:

Topic T7 - Karst Hydrogeology
This session deals with the recent advances and novel application of research methods in hydrogeological
studies in karst systems. Special emphasis will be focused on issues related to quantity and quality of karst waters, hydrodynamic, hydrochemistry and isotopes. A deeper understanding of tracing techniques by means of fluorescent and natural tracers are key
aspects for a more precise conceptualization of carbonate karst aquifers. Additionally, new trends on groundwater recharge and water management as well as modeling methods for simulating flow distribution, solute transport and reactive (coupled) processes
will also be highlighted in this topic.
