Funding Increase for NCKRI!

NCKRI has received a $500,000 increase in its annual federal support! Senator Martin Heinrich picked up the ball to start this effort and Senator Tom Udall carried it to the finish line. NCKRI is a non-profit organization funded through a combination of federal, State of New Mexico, and private support. We thank the senators, their fabulous staffs, and the National Park Service who worked together to make this possible. Stay tuned in the coming months for more news as we put those funds to good use.

15th Sinkhole Conference Proceedings Now Available

Since the publication of the first volume in 1984, the proceedings of the Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst (generally called “The Sinkhole Conference”) have been widely used and cited.  The proceedings from this year’s conference, the 15th, are a 425-page volume that contains 53 peer-reviewed papers organized under the following headings: a) Karst Hydrogeology, b) Sinkhole Litigation and Liability, c) GIS Mapping-Management of Karst, d) Karst Hydrology and Geochemistry, e) Appalachian Karst, f) Formation of Karst and Sinkholes, g) Karst Geophysics, and h) Geotechnical and Modeling Investigations in Karst. This 15th conference was organized jointly by NCKRI and the Karst Waters Institute to include the 3rd Appalachian Karst Symposium.

These proceedings and other reports from the conference can be download at no cost from the NCKRI website: http://www.nckri.org/about_nckri/nckri_publications.htm. Select Symposium 7. While you are there, you are welcome to download other NCKRI publications, all of which are available for free.

Graduate Student Karst Hydrology Research Assistantships Available: University of Guam

Dear recent graduates in natural sciences, engineering, math or computer science:

The University of Guam’s Water & Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) is offering two two-year research assistantships beginning August 2018 (Fall Semester, Fanuchanan) or January 2019 (Spring Semester, Fanomnakan) for research work in karst hydrology and/or remote sensing that can earn you a Master of science degree in UOG’s graduate Environmental Science program.  The project is funded by NASA EPSCoR, and is collaborative with the University of Hawaii’s College of Engineering (UHCOE). Researchers on Guam will use self-guiding unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) developed by UHCOE engineering faculty and students to collect, analyze, and interpret thermal imagery to locate and estimate freshwater discharge into coastal waters from the limestone aquifer of northern Guam. The University of Guam is a US Land Grant University accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and WERI is one of the nation’s top-ranked National Institutes for Water Resources Research.

Fieldwork will include locating, mapping, and measuring freshwater discharge from coastal caves, fractures, and submerged springs. Measurements will provide ground truth by which to calibrate remotely-sensed estimates of freshwater discharge from thermal imagery collected by UAVs. Graduate research assistants at the University of Guam will work with teams of UOG and UHCOE researchers to deploy and operate UAVs, collect field data in the coastal zone, and analyze and interpret remotely-sensed data in light of ground-based field data. Research assistantships will pay a salary plus tuition and fees for two years for work leading to a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science.

If you would like to do cutting-edge research in remote-sensing, GIS, and/or coastal karst hydrogeology while earning an MSci. in Environmental Science and living and working on a tropical island in the western Pacific, please contact Dr. John Jenson, Director, WERI, and/or Dr. Romina King, Assistant Professor of Geography, University of Guam at the addresses below.  You may apply on-line through the Research Corporation University of Guam-Job Announcements, at the link below.

To learn more about this opportunity and see some photos what could be your field area, take a look at the presentation in the link below, or contact Dr. John Jenson, WERI Director at or Dr. Romina King at . www.uog.edu

Call for Karst Spring Discharge Data for Common Publication

Dear karst researcher,

The aim of this project is to make a large number of karst spring discharge observations publicly available, which we believe will bring great advancement to the karst research community.

Since 2015, we have been collecting data of karst spring discharge observations across the globe from national databases, published articles, PhD theses, NGO reports, and—most importantly—from research partners like you.

The data collection will continue until October and we will be glad to expand the database with your data. All datasets will be published in a data journal and all contributors will be invited for co-authorship.

Please find below the key information for data contribution to the project:

Requirements

We are essentially interested in time series observations of karst spring discharges. Our standards are datasets with at least daily resolution and three hydrological years. In addition, other information of the spring catchment such as spring name, precipitation, elevation, longitude and latitude, recharge area, vegetation and catchment area can be included if available.

Exceptions

Due to the general difficulty to obtain data in tropical and sub-tropical regions, spring discharge observations with coarser resolution and less the three (3) hydrological years coming from this region will be accepted.

Time plan & deadline for data provision

We plan to prepare a data publication with all datasets that we have at the beginning of autumn. All data contributors will be invited for co-authorship. To meet our target for the publication, we have set a deadline for all friends willing to contribute data to support this project. Therefore, we would like to receive all (contributors’) data on or before 1 October 2018.

The data journal

We were in contact with Nature Scientific Data and Earth System Science Data. Both journals have reasonable impact factors and are open access. The publication costs will be covered by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which is funding the project (https://bit.ly/2mszWiU). While Nature Scientific data has a very strict review procedure, Earth System Science Data signalized that they support every contribution that brings advance to the scientific community. We will try Nature Scientific Data first.

Present state of work

Recently, we presented the state of the data base at the just IAH Eurokarst conference in Besancon, France (https://bit.ly/2N6SRuQ). We are currently drafting the paper and preparing the data validation.

If you want to join with your data, please get in contact with our data base expert Tunde Olarinoye ().

We hope to make this project a community effort and we look forward to receiving your contribution.

Thank so much for your participation,

Andreas Hartmann & Tunde Olarinoye

New Book: Cave and Karst Systems of Romania

This book, edited by Gheorghe Ponta and Dr. Bogdan Onac, focuses on Romania’s more than 12,000 caves, which developed in limestone (including thermal water caves), salt, gypsum, and occasionally in sandstone. It examines these caves and related topics in a format suitable for cavers, while also addressing a broad range of aspects useful for students and researchers. Since the Institute of Speleology was first established by Emil Racovita in 1920, a great deal of research has been conducted on all cave and karst types. As such, the book examines a variety of scientific fields, including karst geology, hydrogeology, biospeleology, paleoclimatology, mineralogy and archaeology.
