Тема: Cave and karst news and announcements from NCKRI

Dear Friends,

About once or twice a year I include a short note with information about this e-mail list. It is that time again.

The US National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) was created to conduct, support, facilitate, and promote cave and karst research, education, management,
archiving of data, and collaborations that support all of the above at a national and international level. This list is one way we meet those goals. The news and announcements below are not just NCKRI activities, but include many activities from our colleagues
around the world. If you have cave and karst news and announcements that you would like us to distribute, just send it to me and it will go out in the next posting.

These messages are sent to over 2,000 people around the world. Please feel free to share them. If anyone wants to join this list, just send me your e-mail
address. We do not sell our list or spam anyone, and there is no cost. Some national organizations have asked us to send messages to their e-mail lists, and we have just added our friends at Spéléo-Club du Liban to these messages.

Now for the latest news and announcements:

·        New Cave and Karst Studies Professor Coming to NCKRI and New Mexico Tech!
·        Graduate Student Karst Hydrology Research Assistantships Available: University of Guam
·        Society for American Archaeology: Cave Session Call for Abstracts
·        Sinkhole Conference Proceedings: Correction!!
·        Webinar: The International Union of Speleology and the NSS
·         1 st Columbian Speleological Congress and 8 th Congress of FEALC: Registration Open
·        UIS Bulletin: New Issue Now Available!
·        Friends of Karst Meeting: USA
·        List of Upcoming Cave and Karst Meetings

Please contact the people and organizations listed below for more information, and feel free to share this message with anyone who may be interested.

New Cave and Karst Studies Professor Coming to NCKRI and New Mexico Tech!

NCKRI is proud to announce that it has hired Dr. Daniel Jones to serve as NCKRI’s new Academic Director, who will be teaching at and directing NCKRI’s student Cave and Karst Studies Program in the Department of Earth and Environmental
Science at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Dr. Jones is a geomicrobiologist and biogeochemist specializing in microbial sulfur cycling and microbe-mineral interactions in cave systems.
He has a Ph.D. in Geosciences and Biogeochemistry from The Pennsylvania State University, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He is currently completing his position as the program coordinator for
the MnDRIVE Environment initiative at the University of Minnesota, and was a research associate in the University of Minnesota BioTechnology Institute. He remains affiliate graduate faculty in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota.
In addition to his work on caves and karst, Dr. Jones has diverse research interests in the field of geomicrobiology, and he has studied microbial processes in acidic mine drainage, marine sediments, and wetland ecosystems. Dr. Jones will begin working at
New Mexico Tech and developing NCKRI’s Academic program in January 2019. We look forward to working with him on the NCKRI and New Mexico Tech Team.

Graduate Student Karst Hydrology Research Assistantships Available: University of Guam

Below is an announcement sent earlier, but the deadline for application has been extended to the dates listed below.

Dear recent graduates in natural sciences, engineering, math or computer science:

The University of Guam’s Water & Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) is offering two two-year research assistantships beginning
January 2019 (Spring Semester) or May 2019 (Summer Semester) for research work in karst hydrology and/or remote sensing that can earn you a Master of science degree in UOG’s graduate Environmental Science program.  The project is funded by NASA EPSCoR, and
is collaborative with the University of Hawaii’s College of Engineering (UHCOE). Researchers on Guam will use self-guiding unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) developed by UHCOE engineering faculty and students to collect, analyze, and interpret thermal imagery
to locate and estimate freshwater discharge into coastal waters from the limestone aquifer of northern Guam. The University of Guam is a US Land Grant University accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and WERI is one of the nation’s
top-ranked National Institutes for Water Resources Research.

Fieldwork will include locating, mapping, and measuring freshwater discharge from coastal caves, fractures, and submerged springs. Measurements will
provide ground truth by which to calibrate remotely-sensed estimates of freshwater discharge from thermal imagery collected by UAVs. Graduate research assistants at the University of Guam will work with teams of UOG and UHCOE researchers to deploy and operate
UAVs, collect field data in the coastal zone, and analyze and interpret remotely-sensed data in light of ground-based field data. Research assistantships will pay a salary plus tuition and fees for two years for work leading to a Master of Science degree in
 Environmental Science.

If you would like to do cutting-edge research in remote-sensing, GIS, and/or coastal karst hydrogeology while earning an MSci. in Environmental Science
and living and working on a tropical island in the western Pacific, please contact Dr. John Jenson, Director, WERI, and/or Dr. Romina King, Assistant Professor of Geography, University of Guam at the addresses below.  You may apply on-line through the Research
Corporation University of Guam-Job Announcements, at the link below.

To learn more about this opportunity and see some photos what could be your field area, take a look at the presentation in the link below, or contact Dr.
John Jenson, WERI Director at or Dr. Romina King at . www.uog.edu

Society for American Archaeology: Cave Session Call for Abstracts

The 84 th  Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, on 10-14 April
2019. As has been the tradition for many years, a cave session is being organized. If you are interesting in submitting an abstract or attending, contact Dr. James Brady ( ) for more information. For information on the SAA and the conference in general, visit  http://www.saa.org/ .  The
deadline for submission of abstracts is 6 September2018, at 3:00 pm (US Eastern Time).

Sinkhole Conference Proceedings: Correction!!

If you have downloaded a print quality copy of the Sinkhole Conference proceedings, please open that file and look at the cover of the proceedings (this message does not affect you if you downloaded the web quality version). If it says “NCKRI SYMPOSIUM 7” at the top, then you can stop reading this message. If not, please continue reading.

An early, incorrect version of the proceedings that says “NCKRI SYMPOSIUM 6” was accidentally posted on the Karst Information Portal at http://digital.lib.usf.edu/SFS0064364/00001 and some copies of this draft version were downloaded before this mistake was corrected (although this page still says “Symposium 6,” which should be corrected
this week). In addition to the wrong number, which is important in correctly citing the proceedings, the version that is now posted is the final version and includes other small corrections and improvements. We apologize for the error.

Webinar: The International Union of Speleology and the NSS

NCKRI’s Dr. George Veni will be presenting a webinar on 18 September 2018 at 9:00 PM EDT on the International Union of Speleology (UIS) and its relationship to the US
National Speleological Society (NSS) and its cavers.

Cavers know about caving opportunities and needs in their area. Many have a pretty good idea of what's happening nationally, but what about caving at the global level?
Does it even affect you? Can you get involved, and if so, how?

The UIS is essentially the United Nations of caving. It is composed of 54 member nations, working together to advance cave and karst research and management, and especially exploration, which makes everything else possible. The NSS represents the US to the
 UIS.

This webinar will give you the basic background on the UIS and focus on its many projects around the world, how they merge with the goals of the NSS, and how you can join them—even without leaving home. Dr. Veni is the first UIS President from the USA.

For a pre-webinar preview of the UIS, visit www.uis-speleo.org . To register for this free webinar, go to http://caves.org/webinars/Coming_Attractions.shtml .
