Sinkhole Conference Registration Price Deadline Soon

The Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst , generally known as “The Sinkhole Conference,” is the longest-running international conference of its type. Since 1984, engineers, geologists, hydrologists,
land managers, biologists, and many others have gathered at these meetings to exchange cutting-edge information on karst and its many benefits and challenges. The Sinkhole Conference is managed by the National Cave and Karst Research Institute and this next
conference is jointly organized with the Karst Waters Institute. Additionally, the conference will include the 3 rd  Appalachian Karst Symposium to make for a truly special event.

The 15 th  Sinkhole Conference will occur on 2-6 April 2018 at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, USA, about
a 1.5-hour drive from Washington, DC. The conference circular, which is a convenient summary of the conference, is available from http://www.sinkholeconference.com/ ,
where all other conference details can also be found.

This message reminds you to that the price of registrations increases on 15 February 2018 , so register soon to get the best price. Also, due to security needs at the conference venue, we ask everyone to register by 23 February 2018 . Later and on-site registrants may not be allowed on the grounds. Please register as soon as possible and reserve your lodging.

NSS Section of Cave Geology and Geography Call for Abstracts

The NSS Section of Cave Geology and Geography is accepting abstracts for presentations at the Geology and Geography Session of the 2018 NSS Convention, to be held July
28 – August 3, 2018 in Helena, Montana. Each year, the Geology and Geography Section of the NSS hosts talks featuring the latest research in geology, hydrology, speleogenesis, and many other topics related to caves and karst. All abstracts will be considered
to be for oral presentations unless a poster presentation is specifically requested. At this time, we have not reserved poster space, but could accommodate a poster session if there is sufficient interest and enough advance notice is given to convention organizers.
As we did last year, we also encourage interested researchers to bring posters from other conferences such as GSA, AGU, and ICS that may be of interest to attendees at convention. This provides an additional opportunity to share your work with your colleagues.

Abstracts may be  no more than 250 words in length  (this limit must be strictly met). In addition to the text, the abstracts should contain the title of the paper,
and the name(s), address(es), and email address(es) of the author(s). The abstracts should be informative summaries that include the conclusions, and not lists of topics that "...will be discussed." Bibliographies and references should not be given in the
abstracts. Papers may be submitted for either oral presentation as a poster. Please specify your preference when submitting your abstract.

Please send any questions and your abstracts to:
Katherine Schmid
 .

The deadline for abstracts is May 15, 2018. Early submissions are encouraged. Confirmation notes will be sent to everyone sending an abstract. Details on presentations
times, dates, and other information will be sent to all confirmed participants after the deadline. For online details about the convention, visit:  http://nss2018.caves.org/ . The talks
are generally twenty minutes long and include time for questions.

Please email me if you have any questions and feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might be interested.

Thank you very much,
Katie Schmid

Edwards Aquifer Authority Distinguished Lecture

I’m pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Pierre-Yves Jeannin with the Swiss Institute for Speleology and Karst Studies will be the next Edwards Aquifer Authority Distinguished
 Lecturer on April 13, 2018.

Dr. Jeannin will be speaking on the following topics of Groundwater Management.

* Karst in Mountainous Regions
Most caves in Switzerland have deep shafts and meanders. Many of them were/are influenced by glaciers. What is the difference with deep caves
in Mexico? The talk will give an overview of various types of karst regions with some morphological and hydrological perspectives.
* Karst hydrology and karst hydrogeology
Karst hydrology is mainly focused on time variations, and karst hydrogeology on spatial variations. For many applied questions it is more important
to know where “things happens” rather than when! An outline of the way to study karst according to various applied questions will be presented.
* Modelling flow and particle transport in karst
Flow and transport simulation in karst is still highly challenging. “How can the hydraulic conductivity in a karst aquifer be determined?”,
“Whit is the effect of partially filled caves (epiphreatic zone)?”, “Is turbidity of a spring produced by particles remobilized from sediments within the aquifer or by particles coming from the surface?”
* The breathing of karst
Karst is traversed by strong fluxes of water and air. These fluxes have many implications for the whole thermics of karst massifs. They also
play a role on the weathering of cave walls. Data from various places, including Lascaux cave painted 18’000 years ago will be discussed.

Registration is now open at http://pierre-yvesjeannin2018.eventzilla.net

Note the cost for registration is $24. A flyer announcing the event will be sent out next week.

Thank you,
