Cavers Mailing List     № 292

Топо и разное

Автор: vvkor
Дата: 3 Mar 96

I am please to announce the release of verison 1.1 of WinKarst. This release
contains significant enhancements and some bug squashing. WinKarst is the
confirmed leader in cave mapping software for Windows based systems. WinKarst
has been tested with a wide variety of large cave surveys from many sources.
If you have never seen a copy of the program, I strongly urge you to find out
what the future holds in cave mapping software.

As in the previous release, WinKarst does not have a survey editor. This
problem is has been minimized since WinKarst can now read SMAPS SEF and
COMPASS PLT files, as well as KARST for DOS files. While it is not optimial
to use a DOS program for getting your data into WinKarst, the method is very
easy and the raw data format is simple ASCII or plain text.

WinKarst may be obtained by one of three ways. WinKarst is available from
two popular caving internet ftp sites:

chert.lmu.ac.uk /pub/chert/karst
insl1.etec.uni-karlsruhe.de /pub/caving/programs/ms-sigh

The files names are WINKST11.ZIP (1196633 bytes) and the Win32 version is
called WINKST32.ZIP (848198). There is a file called WINKARST.NEW which is
essentially this message. Be sure to check the byte length before downloading
and set your file transfer protocol (FTP) to binary. The internet can be access
through many of the online services such as CompuServe and America Online or
though many direct corporate or university connections. Two, for those people
who are willing to risk the email system and understand MIME encoding, I will
email it to them (a one meg plus file). Contact me at .
Finally, three, by surface mail. To obtain a copy by surface surface mail, send
$5 to cover postage and materials to:

o Geographic Projections, just in time for use with your new GPS unit!
It is now possible to specify the cave entrances in your survey data file
by longtitude/latitude pairs and plot the caves in one of five geographic
projects using one of twenty datums. Perfect for overlaying on USGP topo
maps. WinKarst includes UTM, Trans Mercator, Albers Equal Area, Lambert
Comformal and Polyconic projections. The mouse's positon in longtitude and
latitude can be displayed in the status bar.

o A Projection Calculator allows you to translate longtitude/latitude
coordinates to x/y values and back in any of the supported projection
types. You will use this feature alone to calculate UTM coordinates.

o Station Aliasing has be added to the raw survey data specification.
WinKarst will automatically find shots of zero length and convert the
"TO" station to an alias. The syntax of the Alias instruction, as the
entire data specification, is completely described in the online help
     file.

o Export your cave maps in either BMP or DXF formats. Exported files have
been successfully imported into programs such as CorelDraw, AutoCAD and
MS Word. The DXF format includes the wall dimensioning, if enabled, to
provide the important step up in drafting your cave map.

o Scale bar and compass have been added to the cave plot. The scale bar
automatically stretches to powers of 10 feet or meters. The compass arrow
always indicates true North. Each item can be added or removed from the
     plot.

o Rotation has now been added to WinKarst. Both the plan and eleveation
views rotate, in step when both views are present. Rotation, like many of
the graphical functions, can be access from the tool bar, hotkeys, menu
or dialog box. Great care has been taken to preserve the "color by depth
into the page" for the elevation view, ensure double clicking on an object
will find the correct item in a rotated view and that it is not possible
to pan out of a rotated view.

o WinKarst now reads and writes SMAPS Exchange Format (SEF) data files.
It is now possible to import caves from your SMAPS system to WinKarst.
WinKarst also supports COMPASS PLT format and it is possible to use
the program to transport cave surveys between any two of the three cave
mapping programs. Note that neither COMPASS or SMAPS support the concept
of individual caves and exporting a multiple cave WinKarst survey to
these programs may yield unexpected results.

o Just in time for your new PC, WinKarst now comes in two compiled versions,
for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. While not strictly Windows 95 compliant
(e.g. no OLE), WinKarst runs under Win32. Run the program on your NT
workstation or under Windows 95 and take full advantage of 32 bit speed
and security. WinKarst also supports "drag and drop" file selection from
     the file manager.

o Loops can now be treated as independent objects, just as systems, caves
     and surveys.

o All of the enhancements have be completely described in an expanded help
file. The help system includes keyword searching, browsing sequences and
hotpoint bitmaps of key dialog boxes.

Fixes

o Care taken to ensure there are no conflicts in the menus with the
keyboard method of typing a letter with the Alt key to make menu
selections. Ensured there were no conflicts with the hotkeys and the
main menu. This makes WinKarst easier to use on laptops.

o Corrected the scale factor while printing. Printout are now exactly the
scale requested. WinKarst will print on any device you have an installed
     driver for under Windows.

o Plots are interruptable by pressing the ESC key.

o Program focus returns to the selected window and an extra redraw of the
previous window no longer happens in a multiple view situation.

o WinKarst has be combed for memory and resource leaks with the best
     development software available.

o The memory usage has been reduced by a third and organized to fragment
the heap less. As a result, even the largest cave surveys can fit into
PC's with only 8MB of RAM.
