Комиссия UIS по искусственным полостям

Автор: Grigory M. Sigalov
Дата: 7 Apr 1995

At the end of this letter you will find all the information available
concerning the Maastricht 1995 symposium including an insription form. Also
included is some information concerning the UIS-Commission on artificial
cavities. It is small selection from the WWW pages available on Internet.

Best wishes,

Joep Orbons

UIS-Commission on artificial cavities:
What are souterrains?
Souterrains are human made subterranean structures like quarries, mines,
waterwells, road- and railway tunnels, underground aquaducts, catacombes,
military underground defence system, troglodyte dwellings etc.
They can be found all over the world and they form a very special study
object as the area's one can encounter are varied. It ranges from biology,
history, mining-engineering, archaeology, speleology, geology, and many
more. Souterrains are studied by many people all over the world. Most of
these researchers are local studygroups, or groups attached to speleological
groups, musea, etc.
What is SOUTERRAINS?
SOUTERRAINS is the newsletter produced by the UIS commision on artificial
cavities. In 1988 the UIS (Union International de Speleology) formed a
workinggroup on artificial cavities to streamline the research. It's aim was
to bring the many studygroups in contact with eachother. In 1993 the
workinggroup was transformed into a commission. Todays president of the UIS
commission on artificial cavities is Joep Orbons.

In the Souterrains newsletter on paper and on Internet you find:
- Information per country
- Summaries of publications
- Organisations concerned with souterrains
- Interresting places to visit
- Questions and answers
- Country representatives and other persons
- Comming events

Questions and Answers
This page contains questions about artificial cavities. If you have an
answer or some other reaction, mail it to:
Souterrains and it will be added to the question, so anyone can read it.
This way w can set up some sort of knowledge system.
Question: Subterranean "cultural monuments"?
The 80 kilometers of subterranean limestone quarries in the mount
Saint Peter near Maastricht are protected as "natural monument".
This gives no guarantee that their value as a huge archieve of
regional history is being preserved.
I am doing research after the possibility of getting the "cultural
monument" status for these quarries at the University of Limburg.
I am looking for precedents abroad. If you know any subterranean
object that has gotten an official status as "cultural monument" I
would be very happy if you could let me know the following: if
there is any such object in your country. The name of the object,
the title of the status, some grounds on which it got this status.
Answers: No answers yet.

>From the 19th till the 25th of August 1995 the city of Maastricht will host
a symposium about man made underground structures. This symposium is one in
a row of ymposia on this item that took place all over Europe in the last 10
years. After Maastricht, Paris, Napels, Bath and Prague it is once again
time to organise the event in the Netherlands. This symposium will be
organised by the SOK a studygroup of the Natural-History Society in
Limburg. This definite registration-form is meant for those who want to
participate in this symposium. The organisation requests you to fill in this
form completely, if applicable, and send it back as soon as possible.
